For over a decade, the craze of Chinese college graduates taking qualifying examinations to become civil servants has remained unabated. An important proportion of graduates view civil service as their top priority in job selection and they spare no efforts in preparing for those examinations, sometimes years before their graduation.
To some extent, this craze is a modern revival of the ancient notion that “those who excel in academics end up in officialdom.” In the present-day China, however, there are complicated reasons underlying this phenomenon. The jobs in sectors other than civil service are insecure and unstable, and employees have to work under greater stress faced with growing competitions in the workplace and the industry. Some government departments are related to monopolized industries and civil servants can enjoy unusually high salaries and welfare benefits. Finally, government officials are usually regarded as occupying the highest rung of the social hierarchy and a student who succeeds in becoming government official is considered the pride of the family, adding prestige and glory to the entire clan.
For all the apparent attractions of the officialdom, the craze of entering the civil service is a distorted one. In the United States, truly ambitious students enter the industry instead of civil departments, where they apply their individual initiative to achieve personal success. It has already been pointed out that, with so many best minds of the nation fighting their way into the civil sectors, the consequences are catastrophic. The civil servants system, with its inherent bureaucracy and rigid rules, would inevitably turn the otherwise energetic and aggressive young people into docile followers of their superiors’ instructions and dutiful but mediocre implementers of executive orders. This will considerably undermine the vitality of a whole generation and the competitiveness of the entire country in the international arena. All forms of craze are accompanied by elements of irrationality and abnormality and, the sooner this craze vanishes, the better.
From the picture above,we can see a spical "hotpot",which contains many unique ingredients, stand for "LAO SHE","KONG FU","Decompostion" and some things to that effect. At the bottom of the picture,a sentence stands there extremely prominent, which can be brielf interpreted by this way:culture "hotpot" is not only good tasting but also strongly good for one`s health. A bit exggerating picture is,however, through careful observation,we may discover that behind this strange senario, what the cartoonist intends to show us is extremely obvious:the significance of integration between Chinese culture and other countries` culture.
With the implementation of the China`s reform and opening up,an emerging tendency is that more and more foriegners are getting fascinated with our Chinese culture. They come to China to learn Chinese language, taste delicious Chinese foods, make friends with Chinese people, and etc.All these make them pretty comfortable and agreeable. At the same time, however, this phenomenon also stirred a heated dated in our society,so,how to render the other countries culture be more compatible with our Chinese culture has caused wide public concern.
As far as I am concerned, before giving my opinion I think we should take closely look at the culture`s function widely.Policymakers should be more aware of that culture integration not only benefits to our making a further development but exerts a great contribution to the world peace.
This cartoon depicts an ironic scene: a man is walking dangerously on a wire with a pole in his hand. On one end of the pole hangs a box which is named "the convenience of jobs" while on the other end hangs a box which is labelled"illegal profits". The man is trying hard to reach the end of the wire, where a piece of papar is attached which says "you should be responsible for what you have done. " However, the man believes that he will not be blamed since he has taken just a little. The sobering aspect of this cartoon is corruption always happens on those who think they are the lucky ones.
Human nature being what it is, most people have a kind of fluke mind that they may not be punished since the amount they take illegally is small. However, this idea could not be more wrong in our contemporary society. Let's assume that all the government officials in China hold this idea. If this assumption comes true, it will definitely exert a butterfly effect: the appetite of these officials will become even bigger. The amount of money they take may end up as astronomical figures. One day their behavior will be revealed as severe crime and they will spend the rest of their lives in jail.
So it can be justified without any exaggeration that when we look at the consequences of curruption, we may find it very difficult to assess the costs. But these costs can be very considerable and may even hurl the whole society system into a chaos. It occurs to many that the most effective solution is to appeal to the authorities, or to take legal means. But that is just a passive wayand only works on extreme cases. Therefore, I recommend that massive media, school education and family cultivation should be activated to call for self-discipline on this matter.
How concise but thought-provoking the picture is! What is clearly depicted in the picture is that a boy, sitting in front of a computer, is selecting courses through the system of selecting courses, who takes a considerable number of factors into consideration ,which include the emphasis of innovation, the updating of knowledge and the level of difficulty as well as the scoring, the qualified rate and burden of assignment. Apparently,it is how to make the best courses for college students that is what the author intends to convey to us.
It is not uncommon to find that with the development of society and economy, the competition is becoming increasingly intense and the updating of knowledge is getting quicker and quicker.Though some courses are easy to learn and get high scores,it may be out of date.In addition ,it has been universally acknowledged that the awareness of innovation will not only be beneficial to our personal growth and success but also contribute to the development and progress of society and economy ,which is the most essential qualification that anyone who wants to achieve success should possess.Consequently ,the courses stressing innovation should be chosen.Furthermore, the way to success is full of obstacles and hardships. Anyone who is eager to get successful must realize that there is no shortcut to success at all because all achievements come from laborious trial and effort. Accordingly ,young students are supposed to choose some courses with great difficulties to improve their abilities.
After what we have discussed above,we can reasonably come to the conclusion that whatever the prospect is,however difficult the situation is,we ,young students ,should have the courage to face difficulties ,be willing to absorb new knowledge and cultivate the consciousness of innovation.I am strongly convinced that only by doing so,can our promising future be guaranteed.
Laziness is a sin. everyone knows that. We have probably all had lectures pointing out that lazi-ness is immoral, that it is wasteful, and that lazy people will never amount to anything in life.
But laziness can be more harmful than that, and it is often caused by more complex reasons than the simple wish to avoid work. Some people who appear to be lazy are suffering from much moreserious problems. They may be so distrustful of their fellow workers that they are unable to join in any group task for fear of being laughed at or fear of having their ideas stolen. These people who seem lazy may be deadened by a fear of failure that prevents fruitful work. Or other sorts of fantasies may prevent work: some people are so busy planning, sometimes planning great deals of fantastic achievements, that they are unable to deal with whatever " lesser " work is on hand. Still other people are not avoiding work, strictly speaking; they are nearly procrastinatingrescheduling their day.
Laziness can actually be helpful. Like procrastinators, some people look lazy when they are really thinking, planning, researching. We should all remember that some great scientific discoveries occurred by chance. Newton wasn't working in the orchard when the apple hit him and he devised the theory of gravity. Taking a rest can be particularly helpful to the athlete who is trying too hard or the doctor who's simply working himself overtime too many evenings at the clinic.
So be careful when you' re tempted to call someone lazy. That person may be thinking, resting or planning his or her next book.
In the pictures above are a father and her beloved son. In the left cartoon, smoking a cigarette and sitting in a sofa comfortably, the father is watching a football match on TV and shouting, “Son, study hard for me!” On the contrary, in the left portrayal, at 9 p.m. , the father is studying together with his son, both totally absorbed in their books. The caption indicates, “Instead of merely making a request, setting an example.”
The purpose of the pictures is to show us that utmost significance should be attached to practicing what you preach. On the one hand, parents teach much more by their actions, than by their words. Some of them may say to their children, “don’t say nasty things about so and so”, and then the children will hear them criticize their friends and neighbors. On the other hand, parenting is such a crucial responsibility, yet there are no required courses to prepare one to undertake this role in life. The only learning is the example from one’s own parents.
To sum up, parents are the best teachers.
Obviously, if parents’ actions don’t conflict their own words, they would have the opportunity to be outstanding examples of their children. Just as an old saying goes, “Action speak louder than words.”
This pie chart clearly illustrates the purposes of students’ touring in a certain university. As is reflected by the diagram, 37 percent of college students travel in a bid to appreciating the scenery, next comes the aim of relieving pressure, accounting for 33% percent. By contrast, the percentage of students travelling aiming at others, making friends and cultivating independence account for 15%, 9% and 6% respectively.
Several primary factors could contribute to this phenomenon. In the first place, travel can offer us a wide range of experiences. In travelling, we may join tourists marveling at the incredible power of Niagara Falls, mingle with the happy throngs strolling in the Paris boulevards and experience the bitterness and joy of people on different lands and in different times. In the second place, college students, who have to juggle academic work, romantic relationships and a busy social calendar, are particularly susceptible to pressure. By touring, they can successfully manage and reduce stress.
Taking all these factors into consideration, we may predict that with the quickening pace of campus life and ever-increasing pressure, the number of university students touring will keep growing in the forthcoming decade.
This is a tremendously interesting and thought-provoking picture. From the left picture, it describes a young mother holding a little girl’s hand. However, when you look at the right part of the drawing, you will see another picture which stands in marked contrast to the right part: an adult female supporting an old mother’s with her hand. As is vividly shown by the picture, the issue of the aging population in China has become a major concern around our society, which is increasingly serious.
The picture is attempting to convey a thought-provoking message.
Filial piety has been advocated as a traditional Chinese virtue throughout history. In the first place, every step of a child’s growth, from birth to death, bears so much time and energy of the parents and above all, their unselfish love. So our parents rightly deserve our reward—love, respect, care and support. Whatis more, family relationship is very much like a mirror. If you smile upon it, it will smile back upon you. By treating our parents kindly, we will set an example for our sons and daughters and gain their respect and love in return.
In a word, it is our innate obligation to be filial to our parents.
The photos show two big fans of Beckham—a British football star. One writes the star’s name on his face and the other is having his hair made an expensive Beckham style.
From them, we can vividly sense the enthusiasm of hero worship, which is an ordinary phenomenon in modern society. As a matter of fact, with mass media and multi’ culture fast developing, hero worship covers an increasingly large scope. People from all walks of life, usually if they are successful, outstanding or popular, may be admired by others.
Hero worship is not absolutely right or wrong. It depends on what the wors hipper does for his idol. If handled appropriately, hero worship may stimulate the positive aspects in us, such as passion for life, motivation for work and noble values. Learning from our idols we can gain enlightenment, encouragement and qualities that we need when we strive for a career. By loving them, we can add color to our life and explore a larger range of social experiences.
Education plays a very important role in the modernization of our country. The modernization of our country calls for the modernization of education in advance. However, the development of education is by no means balanced all over the country. In some poverty-stricken areas, a surprisingly large number of school-agars cannot afford to go to school. As a result, the Project Hope is initiated to promote education in those areas.
This project, in my eyes, is necessary especially in two respects. For one thing, if children cant gain access to education, the lack of human resources will be inevitable, and how can we hope to get rid of illiteracy and poverty? For another, at present it is beyond the ability of our government to provide enough money for so many school dropouts. The project hope accepts donations from organizations, enterprises and individuals, and then distributes the fund scientifically and reasonably to those in need of help.
My suggestion is that all of us who have the financial ability join in the Project to help those school-agers. Only when all of us extend the helping hands can we hope to modernize our education and our nation.
The picture vividly depicts a lovely American girl in traditional Chinese costume with a sweet smile on her face. She wears ribbons, necklaces and other accessories that are characteristic of the clothes of a certain Chinese minority group. Undoubtedly, the costume has added oriental charm/glamour to her beautiful look/appearance/features.
What the picture conveys goes far beyond only/merely a new fashion trend. Instead, it carries cultural meanings/implications as well. The fact that people from different countries are attracted to mysterious Chinese culture indicates that to some extent a culture can be accepted, respected, appreciated and shared internationally. In other words, a nation’s unique/distinctive culture can become international through worldwide economic and cultural exchanges. Since the trend of globalization become irresistible, the increasing cultural exchanges can effectively improve mutual understanding and friendship.
It is my view that national culture as priceless spiritual treasure should be preserved and cherished. Meanwhile, there are good reasons to advocate international culture for those ideas from the other cultures, controversial or even absurd at first sight, can provide a different perspective for us to observe the world in the long run. Nevertheless, when we are confronted with a different culture, we should be sensible enough to absorb its essence and to resist its dark side. Only in this way can we promote cultural development positively and make our world dimensional, colorful and vigorous.
As is portrayed in the picture, a boiling hotpot contains various forms of both domestic and alien cultures. The hodgepodge could be categorized as a mixture of literature, moral values and performing arts. It reveals to us that our modern culture is netplicated and diverse.
I cannot help relating this picture to reality and wondering why this happened in reality. For one thing, the globalization has made it possible that the cultures from all over the world can meet and mix together and we can enjoy the benefits of alien cultures without going abroad. For another, the harmonious coexistence between the traditions and modern cultures gives us a rich identity and spiritual wealth.
What is right attitude we should take toward the phenomenon? First of all, we should get lost in face of the diverse cultures and values. We must remember we must preserve our own national and local cultures in which we take root. Secondly, in the mixture of cultures and values we must learn to distinguish the good from the harmful. We should absorb the nutritious good cultures and values but at the same time we must defend ourselves against the danger of being polluted by the bad cultures and values.
If I were to leave my home for a year, there is one thing I definitely would take with me: my cellphone. With my cell phone, I could call my friends or family if I ever was lonely, needed advice,or just wanted to talk.
If I were away from home for a year, I would be very lonely, especially in the beginning before Imade friends. If I could call my mother and father, I would hear their familiar voices and I wouldnot feel so lonely. Hearing my friends’ voices would also help me overcome my sadness.
I’ve never been on my own so there are many things I am not familiar with. I’ve never opened abank account, got a driver’s license, or made my own food. If I had to cook chicken orsomething, I could call up my mother and she could tell me how to make dinner.
Sometimes, I may just want to talk in my own language. With my cell phone, I could call my friends and tell them about my new life. This would make them jealous of me. I would call thema lot so they could hear all the wonderful things I am doing.
For me a cell phone is a necessity. I would need it anytime I was lonely, anytime I needed to dosomething I didn’t know how to do, and anytime I just wanted to talk. Of course, the phone bill will be sent to my parents.
How impressive the set of pictures are! In the first picture, the mother takes the daughter by the hand, while after thirty years the daughter hold her mother’s hand which is depicted in the second picture.
The meaning conveyed in the two pictures reveals that to respect the old and love the young is the traditional virtue and should be passed on from one generation to another. In real life, our parents not only give us life but do much in bringing us up. As the time goes on, they grow so physically weak that they no longer have the power to support themselves. So it is human nature for us to take our responsibility of taking care of them when they are old. Meanwhile, the virtue of willing to support the graying parents should be educated among Chinese people, no matter how young they are. It is necessary to drill the idea to the young all the time, so that they can better respect the older in future.
With love for the young, our society will be full of sunshine; with respect for the old, our country will be harmony and prosperous.
In an effort to better students’ ability and enrich their extracurricular activities, the Postgraduates’ Association is recruiting volunteers for an international conference on globalization to be held from June 4th to 7th in Peking University.
First of all, applicants should be easy-going and have a cheerful personality. In addition, candidates must have outstanding skills at English listening comprehension and the ability to speak both Chinese and English fluently. Finally, students with relevant professional knowledge are preferred.
Those postgraduates who are interested in taking part in it may send your resume to before June 1st. Your applications are welcome.
The above two pictures have shaped sharp contrast to each other. In one picture, a flower grows in a greenhouse and is in full bloom in spite of the outside rain. But in the other, the flower, moved outside and without the protection of the greenhouse, is withering in the thunderstorm. The two pictures show us that the flower, which is raised in a greenhouse and carefully protected, cannot stand natural wind and rain at all.
It is most likely that the drawer means to compare children in our country to the flower in his drawings and reflect a problem in the present education of our children. For one thing, nowadays, most children are brought up by their parents with tender care. Parents always try their best to meet the children’s demands, to provide them with the best environment of growth and study and to protect them from any possible harms, setbacks and sufferings. For another, owing to the present examination’ oriented education system, most children are too heavily burdened with studies to have time to take part in social activities, so they learn little about the society, the real world outside their family and school. Growing up in such a manner and such an environment, the children will inevitably and naturally lack the ability to stand sufferings and overcome obstacles when they leave their parents and step into the society.
To sum up, the problem of children’s education must be solved timely and effectively because it is they that constitute the future of our country.
in this part, you are to write an essay of about 200 words within 40 minutes. your essay must meet the requirements below.
show your understanding of the meaning of the picture below state the harmful effects of fake and inferior products suggest ways to fight against fake and inferior products as the picture given depicts, the socialist market-oriented economy in our country is developing rapidly, just like a truck running at a high speed.
but the general public is surprised to find that there are more and more fake and inferior products seriously hampering the expansion of our marker economy. consumers have to be very careful in purchasing goods and services they need; otherwise they will fall into the traps set by the illegal manufacturers who make fake and inferior products.
there is no doubt that fake and inferior products are extremely harmful. in the first place, they endanger people’s health, giving rise to a lot of injury accidents. for instance, inferior-quality medicines not only aggravate a patient’s condition, but also tend to threaten his life and, what’s worse, to result in his death. secondly, fake and inferior products are usually sold on the cheap. in many cases they interfere with the normal economic order in our country, affecting the market of many high-quality goods. this in a great degree, hinders the development of our socialist market economy and harms the interests of our state. therefore, we can say that fake and inferior products are a dangerous “tumor” in our healthy economy, which must be cut away as soon possible.
in my opinion, several strong measures should be adopted to fight against fake and inferior products. on the one hand, those who make them must be severely punished by the law. on the other hand, due to the growing complexity of the market, consumers are often faced with deceptive practices. although there are laws designed to protect consumers, there is not a sufficient number of law enforcers to cover all the abuses of the marketplace. hence, consumers should learn to discern between true and false. only in this way can they defend their own legal rights and interests.
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents are the best teachers. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. Throughout my life, I have been lucky enough to have a very good relationship with my parents. They have supported me, given me necessary criticism, and taught me a great deal about how to live my life. Parents can be very important teachers in our lives; however, they are not always the best teachers. Parents may be too close to their children emotionally. Sometimes they can only see their children though the eyes of a protector. For example, they may limit a child' s freedom in the name of safety. A teacher might see a trip to a big city as a valuable new experience. However, it might seem too dangerous to a parent. Another problem is that parents may expect their children' s interests to be similar to their own. They can' t seem to separate from their children in their mind. If they love science, they may try to force their child to love science too. But what if their child' s true love is art, or writing, or car repair? Parents are usually eager to pass on their value to their children.
But should children always believe what their parents do? Maybe different generations need different ways of thinking. When children are young, they believe that their parents are always rights. But when they get older, they realize there are other views. Sometimes parents, especially older ones, can' t keep up with rapid social or technology changes. A student who has friends of all different races and backgrounds at school may find that her parents don' t really understand or value the digital revolution. Sometimes kids have to find their own ways to what they believe in. The most important thing to realize is that we all have many teachers in our lives. Our parents teach us, our teachers teach us, and our peers teach us. Books and newspapers and television also teach us. All of them are valuable.
In the picture, there shapes a sharp conflict between the goal keeper and the ball player. The former exaggerates the goal and minimizes himself in his mind while the latter thinks otherwise. Actually, both the goal and the keeper are just in normal size. What causes the problem is that they have overestimated the difficulty they are each faced with. Such attitude towards difficulty will surely produce negative effects on the results.
Difficulties are in the pathway of everyone. To overcome them, we must at first make correct judgment on the situation, which is based on confidence, courage and rational thinking. Lets take memory for example. In the process of learning, students need to remember a lot of things, such as Chemical Elements Periodic Table, ancient articles and mathematical formulae. But many complain that it is hard to remember them accurately and they are ready to give up when they feel so. On the contrary, those who learn successfully are confident about themselves and willing to try although they also feel difficult at first. And later they find the more they practise the memory, the easier it becomes to remember.
In conclusion, if we are to succeed in handling the difficult things, we must have self
confidence, judge the situation rationally and be courageous enough to keep trying.
As is vividly depicted in the picture, many young people are standing together when they find that there are so many ways to go.Thus, all of them are stopping there and waiting for help. Obviously, it is the shortage of confidence for their future that makes it impossible for them to get the attainment they want to.
Simple as it is, what the picture conveys to us is thought-provoking. With the development of economy and society, competition is increasingly fierce and there are more and more chance for us to get. But it is impossible for the ones to achieve attainments if the ones have no striving spirit to surmount the difficulties. Hence, people in mounting numbers put great emphasis on the striving spirit. In fact, it has been universally acknowledged that the ability of fighting is the most essential qualification that anyone who wants to achieve success should possess.
To my way of thinking, the problem that all of the college are just stopping and waiting but no fighting and thinking will generate severe consequences .Measures should be adopted before things get worse. It is high time that all of us ,parents, educators, and the authorities, make combined efforts to make young people change their outlook of life and acquire determined spirit. Only by this way is it reasonable for us to believe that this problem can be perfectly solved in the near future.
