Some pessimistic historians think the whole society of man runs in cycles and that one of the phases is war.
The optimists, on the other hand, think war is not like a flood or a spell of bad weather.
They believe that it is more like a disease for which a cure could be found if the cause were known.
Because war is the ultimate drama of life and death, stories and pictures of it are more interesting than those about peace.
This is so true that all of us, and perhaps those of us on television more than most, are often caught up in the action of war to the exclusion of the ideas of it.
If it is true, as we would like to think it is, that our age is more civilized than age past, we must all agree that it’s very strange that in the twentieth century, we have killed more than 70 millions of our fellowmen on purpose, at war.
Probably the reason we are able to do both — that is, believe on the one hand that we are more civilized and on the other hand wage war to kill — is that killing is not so personal an affair in war as it once was.
The enemy is invisible.
One man doesn’t look another in the eye and kill him with a sword.
The enemy, dead or alive, is largely unseen.
He is killed by remote control: a loud noise, a distant puff of smoke and then...silence.
The pictures of the victim’s wife and children, which he carries in his breast pocket, are destroyed with him.
He is not heard to cry out.
The question of compassion or pity or remorse does not enter into it.
The enemy is not a man, he is a statistic.
It is true, too, that more people are being killed at war now than previously because we’re better at doing it than we used to be.
One man with one modern weapon can kill thousands.

Since the 1950s, most of the stars of pop music have come from Britain and America.
However, in the last ten years, when many different kinds of music have establishedthemselves on the pop scene, more and more stars have come from other countries.
Pop music changes all the time and new stars appear and become famous.
Many of today's stars started out in the 1960s and have changed their music to suit the time.
Although most stars take many years to become famous, their fame does not usually last long.
For a musician to stay popular and still produce good, original music over a long period oftime, is a sign of true star.
Most stars start their careers in a simple way - playing in unknown nightclubs or dance hallswhere people want to dance to the music, not listen to it.
They may have continued doing this for many years until they get a "break" - a chance toperform in a well-known place or get a recording contract.
To become a star is the aim of every singer or musician and the dream of many a pop-crazyteenager.
However a group or star makes it to the top, they can be sure that their lives will change oncethey are successful.
Ordinary teenagers living at home with their parents may suddenly find themselves rich enoughto buy their own houses.
An established superstar may be able to buy several.
Despite the large amounts of money that are earned, life at the top is not easy for many stars.
The pop scene is hard work and many stars need to spend a lot of time away from home.
For a lot of them, this means they have no home life and their personal relationships suffer.
In spite of great public success, life at the top can be very lonely.

Some people say that in the United States the most academically fulfilled college students are those who have fallen in love.
Love is a kind of motivation for learning.
They even say that a student on a US campus will be regarded as eccentric if without a boy/girl friend and that dating is the most indispensable part of college campus life.
Most college students are young adults who are discovering their place in the world.
They discover ideas, information, and opportunities, but they also often discover each other.
Everyday on campus, I see students in love, students hoping for love, and students mourning lost or unrequited love.
Love is a kind of motivation for learning — this would be hard to prove or disprove, but real, solid love between two students definitely can bring clarity and focus to a student’s work.
Suddenly, doing well in school may be twice as meaningful.
They have each other to impress and to look to for help and support when things get difficult.
I’ve seen this happen, and like all aspects of true love; it is a beautiful sight.
However, love does not arrive fully formed, as if it is something for college students to pick up when they pay their tuition or buy their books.
Getting to know potential romantic partners requires the awkward, time-consuming, and frequently frustrating process called dating.
At this stage, relationships are new, unstable, and often chaotic.
Do you go on that date or study for the test?
Do you sit where you can hear the teacher and participate in the class discussion, or do you sit in the back of the room where you can see the object of your desire and possibly exchange those all-important glances?
Do you risk missing a crucial bit of information or being caught unaware with a question while you plan your next step in the relationship?
Where is your attention, really?
On calculus or on how to land that date?
