Oliver Twist is One of Dickens’ most popular stories. The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The main role of this novel,Oliver Twist, was born in a workhouse. His mother was unknown to others and himself, so he became an orphan when he came to the world and was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. It was the tragic of that time that all of the homeless children had to be sent the workhouse and they began their endless life. And Oliver was one of them. Living in the workhouse, he was treated badly by the people there, in particular by Bumble, a parish council official. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. Though he appeared to be humble and docile in everything, he wouldn’t bear the abuse on his mother. When another child said something bad about his mother, he became furious and taught him a lesson by his fists and arms. From this matter we can see that Oliver emphasized a lot on his mother’s reputation. Though he hadn’t saw his mother, he bore the love towards mother in his mind ever since. His escape from the workhouse was the most important crisis point in his life. From then on, he had been living a totally different life from the former one. After he arrived in London, he received an education in villainy from the criminal gang of Fagin that includes the brutal thief Bill Sikes, the famous artful Dodger and Nancy. There he was forced to do bad things, which was a torture to his kind heart. Fortunately, he was rescued by a benefactor—Mr. Brownlow, who was kind enough to offer a good live to the child who had never been cared about by others. He lived a happy and comfortable life, but another thing ended his short, precious happiness. One day, Mr. Brownlow asked Oliver to return some books to the bookseller and to send some money for the new books that he had already collected. But the mysterious Monks got the gang to kidnap the boy again, after which he disappeared in Mr. Brownlow’s life. Searching for a while, Mr. Brownlow had to believe the fact that he had run away with his money. But dramatically, they came across each other again a few years later. Without hesitation, Mr. Brownlow took Oliver home for the second time not caring if he had done something evil. I hope that more people will learn to be kind like Mr. Brownlow so there will be fewer poor people in the world; and I firmly believe that a kind heart will gain a good return. The horror and violence of the dark world that exposed to him didn’t change his original virtues, and I want to mention a girl named Nancy, who was as in fact good as Oliver. The girl’s mind was complex; she felt guilty of the crime but she was reluctant to leave the gang of thieves. But she had a heart of stone,--she still worshiped the justice and had a shred of kindness .She wanted to redeem her former mistakes and protect Oliver, so live or die, she told him the secrets of Monks regardless of her life. Then what she did was discovered by Sikes and was murdered viciously. It is so unexpected that Monks happened to be Oliver’s brother. In order to seize his fortune, he designed such a series plots to kill Oliver. All of us should have been shocked when reading about this. The way I see it, Dickens revealed the dirty corners of the capital society To our relief, the justice conquered the evil at last, and Oliver lived a happy life. Just the sane, I wish that there are fewer children who will experience so many afflictions in our society. And if more people will give their love to others the world will be a perfect one. 本文来源:https://www.wddqw.com/doc/63142a363968011ca300912f.html
