英语寓言小故事三则 1.The Mongoose and The Child

Once, there lived a farmer and his wife. They had a little son. The farmer had a pet mongoose (). The little boy and the mongoose were fond of each other. They were good playmates.

One day the farmer was busy at his fields. The farmer's wife had left to the market. The little boy was fast asleep in a cradle (摇篮). The mongoose was lying down near the cradle.

A cobra (眼镜蛇) somehow got into the house and it was nearing the little boy. The mongoose sniffed (嗅,闻) the snake and jumped up. He fought with the cobra. The cobra began to attack. There was a fierce fight between the cobra and the mongoose. The mongoose finally bit and killed the cobra.

The mongoose saw the farmer's wife returning from market. He ran happily towards her to greet her. She saw blood around the mouth and paws of the mongoose. The farmer's wife mistook that the mongoose had attacked her son.

The farmer's wife took a long stick and gave heavy blows (重击) on the mongoose and then ran into the house. She was shocked to see a dead cobra lying on the floor near her son. Now she realised her mistake. Her sorrow knew no bounds.

Moral (寓意): Look before you leap. 三思而后行。


2.Never advising a fool

On a mango tree in a jungle, there lived many birds. They were happy in their small nests. Before the onset of the rainy season, all the animal of the jungle repaired their homes. The birds also made their homes more secure. Many birds brought twigs (嫩枝) and leaves and others wove their nests. “We should also store some food for our children" chirped(喳叫) one of the birds. And they collected food, until they had enough to see them through the rainy season. They kept themselves busy preparing for the tough times. Soon the rains came. It was followed by thunder and lighting. All the animals and birds stayed in their homes. It continued raining for many days. One day, a monkey wet in the rain came into the forest. He sat on a branch, shivering (颤抖) with cold,water dripping () from its body. The poor monkey tried his best to get shelter, but in vain. The leaves were not enough to save him from the rains. “Brrr! It is so cold!" said the monkey. The birds were watching all this. They felt sorry for the monkey but there was little they could do for him. One of them said, “Brother! Our small nests are not enough to give you shelter." Another bird said, “All of us prepared for the rainy season. If you had, you would not be in this piteous (可怜的) situation." “How dare you tell me what to do?" said the monkey, growling (吼叫) at the bird. The monkey angrily pounced (猛扑) on the bird’s nest, tore it and threw it on the ground. The bird and her chicks were helpless.
