　　In saying that the world is at a crossroads created by science and technology I know I am notthe first. But mankind cannot afford to hesitate in indecision. There is only one choice for us. We must begin to move along the road to a better future for all the peoples of the world and wemust do this now.

　　By the end of the 20th century, the population of the world might have been doubled. Inattempting to ensure food, clothing and a dignified standard of life for this enormous host ofpeople we must use every weapon that science and technology can give us. There are obviousdifficulties for the less developed areas in doing this — for example, lack of capital, differencesin social structure and inadequate knowledge.

　　Our strategy to overcome these difficulties must be total. We have to look at world problemsas a whole, that is, try to better our understanding of the complex interactions between themultitude of development activities. We already know the great gifts that science andtechnology can bestow on all nations. If we are made wiser by a constant appreciation of thecomplexities of what we are attempting, the faster we shall move towards a solution of thereally imperative problems that confront us everywhere.

　　One of the much-talked-about present-day social problems is juvenile delinquency, and its rateof frequency is seemingly on the rise.

　　It is reported in newspapers that the delinquents range in age from 12 to 18. Only a smallportion have committed serious crimes like kidnapping and murdering. Those cases arehandled through the court system. Most of the delinquencies fall into four categories: brawling, including gang fighting with deadly weapons; theft, mostly petty, sexually promiscuousbehaviour and addiction to drugs. The delinquents are generally placed under temporarysupervision by neighbourhood committees, work units or reform schools.

　　The causes of juvenile delinquency are varied. Through media we often come across thefollowing cases:

　　Ill-treatment to teenagers by their step-fathers or stepmothers often lead to family tragedies. School pupil delinquents, being not properly cared for, have chronic behaviour problems. Theirparents are too busy either with business or with gambling. Still, there are cases resulted fromparents' or grandparents' indulgence to their darlings. Petty theft once or twice is notpunished but encouraged. Gradually these petty thieves grow addicted to stealing . Adolescentstried drugs mostly out of curiosity before they finally became habitual drug-takers.

　　Not a few examples can be found around us in our daily life. Limited by time and space, I haveto skip them over. However, juvenile delinquency, being a serious social problem concerningthe young generation, certainly deserves special attention. I think of all the things we can do, the most fundamental one is deepening and strengthening education so as to ultimately savethe young.

　　My father used to talk to me about his five siblings. He used to say that I was unfortunate thatI had none. And I used to envy him and wonder how nice it would be to have a houseful ofbrothers and sisters. I also used to wonder what would happen to me if I were to lose myparents.

　　Frankly speaking, I do not have to share anything with anybody. I own all my parents' love. Ican ask for anything I want. I always wear new clothes and eat the best food. Since my parentsspend all their money on me, I can study at the best university of the country.

　　Lucky as I am, I now and then feel very lonely and I have nobody to complain about myloneliness. How I long for a quarrel with my brothers and sisters! Of course I have classmatesand friends, but they are different. Sometimes I feel so pessimistic that after my parents leavethe world, I will have no blood relatives left to share with me the fond memories of my parents. Furthermore, I am likely to become selfish while I realize the world is for sharing.

　　So, I am happy but lonely; I am fortunate but piteous; I am loved but spoiled; I am well-bredbut selfish, because I am the only child of the family.
