For most of us, the work is the central, dominating factor of life.We spend more than half ourconscious hours at work, traveling to and from work.

What we do there largely determines our standard of living and to a considerable extent thestatus we are accorded by our fellow citizens as well.

It is sometimes said that because leisure has become more important, the indignities andinjustices of work can be pushed into a corner, that because more work is pretty intolerable, thepeople who do it should compensate for its boredom, frustrations and humiliations byconcentrating their hopes on the other parts of their lives.

I reject that as a counsel of despair. For the foreseeable future the material andpsychological rewards which work can provide, and the conditions in which work is done, willcontinue to play a vital part in determining the satisfaction that life can offer. Yet only a smallminority can control the pace at which they work or the conditions in which their work isdone; only for a small minority does work offer scope for creativity, imagination or initiative.

Inequality at work and in work is still one of the cruelest and most glaring forms of inequalityin our society. We cannot hope to solve the more obvious problems of industrial life, many ofwhich arise directly or indirectly from the frustrations created by inequality at work, unlesswe tackle it head-on.Still less can we hope to create a decent and humane society.

In the earliest stages of man’s development he had no more need of money than animals have. He was content with very simple forms of shelter from natural materials around him. he madehis own rough tools and weapons. As he became more civilized, however, he began to wantbetter shelter, more efficient tools and weapons, and more comfortable clothing than could beprovided by the work of his own unskilled hands. For these things he had to turn to the skilledpeople such as smiths and carpenters who were springing up everywhere. It was then that thequestion of payment arose.

At first he got what he wanted by a simple process of exchange. The smith who had not thetime to look after land or cattle was glad to take meat or grain from the farmer in exchangefor an axe or a plough. But as more and more goods which had no fixed exchange value cameon the market, exchange became too complicated to be satisfactory. Another problem arosewhen those who made things wanted to get stocks of wood leather, or iron, but had nothing tooffer in exchange until their finished goods were ready.

Thus the difficulties of exchange led by degrees to the invention of money. In some countries, easily handled things like seeds or shells were given a certain value and the farmer, instead ofpaying the smith for a new axe by giving him some meat or grain, gave him so many shells. Ifthe smith had any shells left when he had bought his food, he could get stocks of the rawmaterials of his trade. In some countries quite large things such as cows or camels or even bigflat stones were used for trade. Later, pieces of metal, bearing values according to the rarity ofthe metal and the size of the pieces, or coins were used. Money as we know it had arrived.

Each human being is born as something new, something that never existed before.

Each is born with the capacity to win at life.

Each person has a unique way of seeing, hearing, touching, tasting and thinking.

Each has his or her own unique potential capabilities and limitations.

Each can be a significant, thinking, aware and creative being — a productive person, awinner.

The word “winner” and “loser” have many meanings.

When we refer to a person as a winner, we do not mean one who makes someone else lose.

To us, a winner is one who responds authentically by being credible, trustworthy, responsive, and genuine, both as an individual and as a member of a society.

Winners do not dedicate their lives to a concept of what they imagine they should be; rather, they are themselves and as such do not use their energy putting on a performance, maintaining pretence, and manipulating others.

They are aware that there is a difference between being loving and acting loving, betweenbeing stupid and acting stupid, between being knowledgeable and acting knowledgeable.

Winners do not need to hide behind a mask.

Winners are not afraid to do their own thinking and to use their own knowledge.

They can separate facts from opinion and don’t pretend to have all the answers.

They listen to others, evaluate what they say, but come to their own conclusions.

Although winners can admire and respect other people, they are not totally defined, demolished, bound, or awed by them.

Winners do not play “helpless”, nor do they play the blaming game.

Instead, they assume responsibility for their own lives.

They do not give others a false authority over them.

Winners are their own bosses and know it.

  A winner’s timing is right.

Winners respond appropriately to the situation.

Their responses are related to the message sent and preserve the significance, worth, well-being, and dignity of the people involved.

Winners know that for everything there is a season and for every activity a time.

Although winners can freely enjoy themselves, they can also postpone enjoyment, candiscipline themselves in the present to enhance their enjoyment in the future.

Winners are not afraid to go after what they want, but they do so in appropriate ways.

Winners do not get their security by controlling others.

They do not set themselves up to lose.

A winner cares about the world and its peoples.

A winner is not isolated from the general problems of society, but is concerned, compassionate, and committed to improving the quality of life.

Even in the face of national and international adversity, a winner’s self-image is not one of apowerless individual.

A winner works to make the world a better place.
