On Saturday morning, April 15, 1865, Abraham Lincoln lay dying in a hall bedroom of a cheaplodging house directly across the street from Ford's Theater, where Booth had shot him. AsLincoln lay dying, people said, "There lies the most perfect ruler of men that the world has everseen." What was the secret of Lincoln's success in dealing with men? I studied the life ofAbraham Lincoln for ten years, and devoted all of three years to writing and rewriting a bookentitled Lincoln the Unknown. I believe I have made as detailed and exhaustive a study ofLincoln's personality and home life as it is possible for any human being to make. I made aspecial study of Lincoln's method of dealing with men. Did he indulge in criticism? Oh, yes. He not only criticized but he wrote letters and poems ridiculing people and dropped theseletters on the country roads where they were sure to be found. One of these letters arousedresentments that burned for a lifetime. In the autumn of 1842, he ridiculed a vain Irishpolitician by the name of James Shields. Shields, sensitive and proud, boiled withindignation. He challenged Lincoln to fight a duel. Lincoln didn't want to fight, but he couldn'tget out of it and save his honor. On the appointed day, he and Shields prepared to fight to thedeath, but at the last minute, their seconds interrupted and stopped the duel. This accidenttaught Lincoln an invaluable lesson in the art of dealing with people. Never again did he writean insulting letter. Never again did he ridicule anyone. And from that time on, he almost nevercriticized anybody for anything. Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain —and mostfools do. But it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving. A greatman shows his greatness by the way he treats little man.

In 1986 when Vancouver, a Canadian port, had just celebrated its 100th birthday, the city'sdevelopments attracted world-wide attention. That a city is based on a harbor and developsflourishingly owing to the prosperity of the harbor is the very road to subsistence anddevelopment taken and experienced by many port cities. Thanks to 100 years of developmentand construction, Vancouver, which boasts a natural ice-free harbor, has become a world-famous port. It has regular passenger and cargo ships sailing to Asia, Oceania, Europe, andLatin America, the annual volume of freight handled amounting to 80 million tons. One third ofthe employed in the city are engaged in trade and transportation. The splendid achievementsof Vancouver are the fruits of its people's wisdom and diligence, comprising the contributionsof its various ethnic groups. Being a country with a vast territory and a sparse population, Canada is even larger than China, yet it has a small population of less than 30 million. For thisreason, absorbing immigrants from foreign countries is a national policy followed long andconsistently by the Canadian Government. It can be said that in Canada all people except theIndians are foreign immigrants. The only difference among them lies in the fact that somebegan to settle down there earlier than others. And Vancouver does particularly deserve beingcalled one of the world's multi-national cities that can be counted on one's fingers. Nowadays, of the 1.8 million residents in Vancouver, as many as half were not born in the city, and one ofevery 4 residents is an Asian. There are 250,000 Chinese living in Vancouver and playing adecisive role in its economic change and development. Half of these Chinese inhabitants havesettled in Vancouver only in the past five years. With so many Chinese living there, Vancouverhas become the largest Chinese community outside Asia.
