例1：Galileo’s greatest glory was that in 1609 he was the first person to turn the newly invented telescope on the heavens to prove that the planets revolve around the sun rather than around the Earth。 （1994， 74）

[长难句分析]这句话的主干是Galileo’s greatest glory was that…，其中that引导表语从句。在表语从句中又出现一个that引导的从句“that the planets revolve around…”，这个that引导的是什么从句呢？仔细观察，会发现，这个that引导的是宾语从句，做不定式to prove的宾语。通过分析，我们得出这个长难句中有两个名词性从句，分别是表语从句和宾语从句。我们在翻译中遇到表语从句和宾语从句时，可采用顺译法，按照“主-系-表（主-谓-宾）”的顺序翻译。

[长难句分析]这句话的主干是it is obvious that…， and that…。。其中代词it是形式主语，真正的主语是两个由that引导的主语从句。对于代词it做形式主语的主语从句，我们翻译的时候，大多采用固定译法，这里的it is obvious that…，我们一般翻译为“显而易见的是…”或“很明显…”。

[译文]再者，显而易见的是一个国家的经济实力与其工农业生产效率密切相关，而效率的提高则又有赖于各种科技人员的努力。

例3：There is no agreement whether methodology refers to the concepts peculiar to historical work in general or to the research techniques appropriate to the various branches of historical inquiry。
