【篇一】2021年12月英语六级阅读理解

  Egypt

Ever since Herodotus, the ancient Greek historian and traveler, first described Egypt as“the gift of the Nile”, she has been capturing the imagination of all who visit her.

The awe -inspiring monuments, left by the Pharaohs, Greeks and Romans as well as by the early Christians and Muslims, attract thousands of visitors every year — but the pyramids, temples, tombs, monasteries and mosques are just part of this country’s fascination.

Modern Egypt —where mud-brick villages stand beside Pharaonic ruins surrounded by towering steel, stone and glass buildings — is at the cultural crossroads of East and West, ancient and modern. While TV antennae decorate rooftops everywhere, from the crowded apartment blocks of Cairo to the mud homes of farming villages and the goatskin tents of the Bedouins, the fellahin throughout the Nile’s fertile valley still tend their fields with the archaic tools of their ancestors.

In the gargantuan city of Cairo the sound of the muezzin summoning the faithful to prayer competes with the pop music of ghetto blasters and the screech of car horns. And everywhere there are people : swathed in long flowing robes or western-style clothes, hanging from buses, weaving through an obstacle course of animals and exhaust-spewing traffic or spilling from hivelike buildings.

Spectacular edifices aside, the attraction of this country lies in its incredible natural beauty and in the overwhelming hospitality of the Egyptian people .

Through everything the Nile River flows serene and majestic, the lifeblood of Egypt as it has been since the beginning of history.

  The Thanksgiving Turkey

Of all the Thanksgiving symbols the turkey has become the most well known. The wild turkey is native to northern Mexico and the eastern United States.

The turkey has brown features with buff-colored feathers on the tips of the wing and on the tail. The male turkey is called a Tom and, as with most birds, is bigger and has brighter and more colorful plumage. The female is called a Hen and is generally smaller and drab in color. The Tom turkey has a long wattle (a fleshy, wrinkled, brightly colored fold of skin hanging from the neck or throat) at the base of its bill and additional wattles on the neck, as well as a prominent tuft of bristles resembling a beard projecting downward from its chest.

The turkey was originally domesticated in Mexico, and was brought into Europe early in the 16th century. Since that time, turkeys have been extensively raised because of the excellent quality of their meat and eggs. Some of the common breeds of turkey in the United States are the Bronze, Narragansett, White Holland, and Bourbon Red.

Though there is no real evidence that turkey was served at the Pilgrim's first thanksgiving, in a book written by the Pilgrim's Governor Bradford, he does make mention of wild turkeys. In a letter sent to England, another Pilgrim describes how the governor sent "four men out fowling" returning with turkeys, ducks and geese.

Benjamin Franklin once said, "I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen as the representative of our country; he is a Bird of bad moral character; like those among Men who live by Sharping and Robbing, he is generally poor and very often lousy. The Turkey is a much more respectable Bird and withal a true original Native of North America. "

  Australia

An island country, a whole continent, Australia has a remarkably cohesive personality and one which, much to our surprise, is markedly foreign. It is no longer the infant colony, peopled by British convicts and pioneers, but a maturing, perhaps still somewhat adolescent individual, ruggedly steering a vital new course in life.

Australia is a sprawl of rock and desert, fringed with lush valleys, snow fields, coral spectaculars, storm-stabbed cliffs and rolling beaches, a land rich in minerals, colors, curious flora , 230 species of mammals , 700 of birds, 400 of reptiles, 70 of amphibia, 2, 200 of fish and 50 , 000 species of insects — and seemingly infinite space . Australia is becoming the richest country in the world, materially.

Total area of the continent is about half as big as Europe, or 25 times the size of Britain and Ireland. Population is bunched mainly in coastal cities, the biggest of which are capitals of the country’s states and the federal capital Canberra . Canberra is a model of a planned garden city and is the seat of a major university. It is smallish in size , but big in importance. Sydney is the largest city, and commercial capital of the country.

Throughout the country, the basic accommodation unit is the motel, a flat prefabricated sprawl of bedrooms. But prices are reasonable and, most important, the rooms are excellent and equipped usually with air-conditioning, a refrigerator and tea and coffee making facilities. Bath tubs are rare, as Australians prefer the convenience and hygiene of a shower. Porterage and other services are rare , as Australians don’t like doing a job which smacks of servility. After all, this is the land of equality and opportunity.

  The Last Dinner

Jesus spent his last few hours of liberty quietly in the suburb of Bethany. It was the day of Passover. The Jews observed this feast by eating roast lamb and unleavened bread.

Jesus asked his disciples to go to town and reserve a room in one of the smaller inns and order a dinner that they might all be together.

When evening came, Judas, looking bland and innocent, left the house together with the others. They went down the Mount of Olives and entered the city and found that everything was ready. They took their seats around one long table and began to eat.

But it was not a cheerful meal. They felt the dread of those coming events which already were casting their terrible shadow over the small group of faithful friends.

Jesus spoke very little. The others sat in gloomy silence. At last Peter could stand it no longer, and he blurted out what was in everybody’s mind . “Master, ”he said,“we want to know. Do you have reason to suspect one of us?” Softly Jesus answered, “ Yes. One among you who is now sitting at this table will bring disaster upon us all. ” Then all the disciples got up and crowded around him. They protested their innocence. At that moment Judas slipped quietly out of the room. They now all knew what was to come. They could no longer remain in that little room. They needed fresh air, and they left the inn and walked out of the gate and went back to the Mount of Olives and opened the wicket to a garden which a friend had told them to use whenever they wished to be alone . It was called Gethsemane , after an old oil-press which stood in a corner. After a while Jesus walked away from the little group. But three of the disciples who were closest to him, followed at a distance.

He turned around and bade them wait and watch while he prayed.

The time had come for a final decision. Escape was still possible , but escape would mean a silent confession of guilt and defeat for his ideas.

He was alone among the silent trees and fought his last great battle . He was a man in the fullness of his years. Life still held a great promise. Death, once his enemies captured him, would come in a most terrible form. He made his choice . He stayed. He went back to his friends. And behold! They were fast asleep . A moment later, the whole garden was in an uproar. Led by Judas, the guards of the Sanhedrin rushed upon the prophet. Judas was at their head. He threw his arms around his master and kissed him. That was the sign for which the soldiers had waited. At that moment, Peter realized what was happening.

  Guy Fawkes Night

When November 5 th comes, many people feel that they should give their dog a sedative, for some dogs get very nervous when they hear loud bangs, and the evening of Guy Fawkes Day is sure to be noisy if there are children living in your neighborhood in England.

November 5 th is a day on which, traditionally, children are allowed, under proper supervision, to let off fireworks, to make a bonfire and burn on it the figure of a ragged dummy ( a‘guy ’) made of old clothes, straw, and — if possible — one of father’s oldest hats. Even the smaller children are allowed to stay up until it is really dark, so that they can admire the rockets that burst in the sky and send down a shower of many-colored sparks.

The origin of this custom lies in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 . In that year King James I was on the throne . Harsh measures had been taken against members of the Roman Catholic faith and certain Catholics plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament on November 5th , when the King was to open Parliament and when, of course , all the Members would be present. The plotters had hired premises adjoining the House of Lords, and had been able to obtain access to a vault beneath the House. There, they had stored thirty-six barrels of gunpowder. These were to be blown up, when the time came , by a very brave, cool-headed man, Guy Fawkes. Unfortunately, according to the traditional account, the plot was discovered when one of the plotters wrote to warn a relation. On November 4 th the vaults were searched , and Guy Fawkes was found and arrested. It is said that he had been warned that the plot had been discovered, but he gallantly persisted in his purpose, hoping against hope that he might be favored by chance and be able to rid his country of men whom he considered evil. He was condemned to be hanged, along with others of his fellow conspirators. He met his death with great fortitude .

It is the failure of this man, who was staunch in his faith though perhaps misguided in actions, that is perpetuated by the children’s fireworks of November 5 th . It is a poor tribute to Fawkes’s courage that his Christian name, Guy, was long used in English to denote a person who is a figure of fun chiefly because of his odd dress.
