Personal Statement, By Ms XXX, For Postgraduate Programme Of Planning, UNSW Personal Statement With good aesthetic feeling, acute sense of space, solid academic background in law, rich working experience in transportation administration, and enthusiasm for urban development, I am particularly suitable for the postgraduate programme of town planning. In 1983, I was born in Beijing which is not only the capital city of China, but also the economic and cultural centre of this country. With the continuously booming population of more than 20 million, Beijing has become one of the largest metropolitan areas of the world. It is common to see high-rises going up all over the city. As every Beijing-sider does, I am proud of living in such a vibrating and attractive megacity, while concerning about a series of issues emerged from this high-speed development as well. When I was a child, I engaged in many creative activities. From my childhood to middle school era, I attended a couple of tutorials in several interests, such as electronic piano, chorus, dancing, drawing and calligraphy courses. This early-education in arts endowed me with more acute senses of melody, colour, space, aesthetic, etc., which are essential skills for an excellent artist or designer. However, as most secondary graduates faced, I had to make the decision on my future, a potential good designer or a clear professional life. I enrolled in the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) which is a national multi-disciplinary university specialising in law. After 4-year full-time study, I accomplished my Bachelor’s Degree of law, there. At the beginning of my college life, I thought that law was not as enjoyable as fine arts to study in, but, gradually, I changed my mind. I appreciated the motto of CUPL, which is “Great Virtue, Legal Consciousness, Constant Investigation and Public Service.” Meanwhile, I found it so charming to seek for the balance of individual right and social obligation. In my point of view, law is just like the music score of a symphony, everyone in the orchestra should follow it correctly to achieve perfect harmony. Besides, it is significant to establish a sound and perfect legal system, so that social equity and justice could be accomplished. Thanks to the legal training, I became more rational, pragmatic, conscientious and thoughtful. After finished undergraduate courses, in 2006, I was employed by the Transportation Administration of Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport as a transportation administration officer. Since the 29th Olympic Games would be held in Beijing in a short time, the whole city devoted huge passion to the preparations at that period. So did us. As everyone knows, taxi industry, just like hotel, airport and railway station, can reflect the reception scale and standard of a city. And taxi drivers are also known as the “city’s business card”. Therefore, the local government attached great 1 Personal Statement, By Ms XXX, For Postgraduate Programme Of Planning, UNSW importance to the taxi industry. Under this circumstances, the Transportation Administration organised service training to all Beijing taxi drivers. As a rookie, my responsibility was to evaluate the training effects of taxi drivers in Chaoyang District. That was the first time I worked as sorts of urban administrator. I considered it a great honour to contribute to the great sports event, Beijing Olympics 2008. During the following 6 years, I worked in Transportation Administration Office of Chaoyang District, taking charge of the administration of regional taxi, charter bus and parking industry in sequence. Through constant practice and investigation, I have finished several reports and made suggestions on the issues of public transportation industry in Beijing. Furthermore, I participated in drafting out relevant operating conduct codes and service quality standards, and organised the implementation in Chaoyang District. In August, 2012, I was transferred to the Transportation Administration Office of Beijing Capital International Airport as a Passenger Transport Superintendent at the terminal buildings. As “the first window of China opened to the world”, Beijing Capital International Airport is always paid high attention by Chinese government. With the rapid development of China’s economy and society, since 1993, the annual passenger throughput of the Capital Airport has dramatically increased from 10 million to 80 million, which is far more than the growth rate of any other international airport in the world, and creates the amazing “China speed”. However, the high speed has brought unprecedented challenge to the urban administration. My daily responsibility, here, is to make every effort to release the pressure of the huge passenger flow in terminal buildings. Day by day, I found that it is quite hard to cope with the transport issues here. For instance, the major public transports are supposed to finish at around 11p.m.; whereas more and more redeye flights and delayed ones have raised the pressure of passenger flow at midnight, when taxi plays the key role. What is worse, the long distance from the airport to downtown area, the extra highway toll, and the restricted low taxi fares altogether leads to only few taxies waiting at the airport during night. Thus, my work team and I had to negotiate with all kinds of organizations and departments, and tried our best to figure out an effective solution as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I realised soon that the poor strategic planning had made it “mission impossible”. With 7-year transportation administration working experience, I deeply realised that a rational integrated urban planning system is required nowadays, fundamentally and urgently. There are numerous interactive factors co-influencing the development of a city, to which I am deeply attracted. Gradually, a thought of taking further study in urban planning disciplines came into my mind. In fact, both my cousin, Lesley Jiang, and her husband, Bo CAO, are alumni of the University of New South Wales. As graduates of the Faculty of Built Environment UNSW, they strongly recommended UNSW to me all the time because of its reputable educational quality and attractive 2 本文来源:https://www.wddqw.com/doc/1241ac77a76e58fafbb00327.html
