Some people think that paying taxes is enough to contribute to the society. Others argue that being a citizen involves more responsibilities. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

1. In almost every country, citizens are required by law to pay their fair share of taxes. Some people think that paying taxes is all they need to do to contribute to the community and society. Despite the importance of taxation, I would argue that there are many other social responsibilities for every social member.

2. On the one hand, it can be argued that tax payers contribute significantly to the government operating smoothly, because money collected from them solves a wide range of problems. With regard to the construction of infrastructures, a sufficient tax revenue allows the government to provide citizens with vital services, ranging from broad roads to easy-to-reach local sports centres. Without these public facilities, life would be difficult and inconvenient. What is more, people in need or with limited abilities can be well supported by the government having a good source of tax revenues. In the UK, for example, there are hundreds of charitable organizations financed by the government helping needy people.

3. On the other hand, I agree with those people who argue that apart from paying taxes everyone should shoulder more social responsibilities. They believe that money cannot

address every problem that a government is faced with. For example, even though the government is financially able to employ enough policemen and policewomen, the crime rate would not decline significantly without everyone abiding the law. Similarly, environmental problems could not be eradicated in a country where the government has no support from the individual citizen.

4. In my opinion, while paying taxes is the most significant civic duty, to create an ideal world to live in requires tax payers to get involved in more social issues.
