At school, Robbies exam scores were less than perfect, perhaps because his mind and ambition was focused on his entertainment career He was inspired3 to entertain4 by his father who was a comedian, and though Robbies current gift is the ability to make great music, his sense of humour is always evident in every performance and interview he gives

Along with his mum Jan, he joined a local theatre group, and was often seen starring in various musicals5 and plays, his biggest part was playing “Dodger” in Oliver

Rob joined Take That6 when he was only 16 He had only one job previous to that, as a double glazing7 salesman

Robs mother was the person responsible for his joining the band, she saw the advert8 for auditions9 and suggested that he apply He did so, and as soon as the other members saw him, they knew he was the right man for the job For five years, Robbie became the joker of the band, always smiling and playing gags on10 people as they rose to recordbreaking stardom

By the demise11 of Take That they had notched up12 8 number ones and 3 hit albums, not to mention millions of fans around the world But on July 17th 1995 all that was to stop, when he left the band

The days with Take That had become very depressing They had strict rules about how they should behave and Rob, being an extrovert13, found these rules unbelievably hard on him They were cushioned14 and protected from the outside world and Rob once said it was similar to being in prison He seeked refuge in15 Cocaine and alcohol

It is believed by some that his record label16 had a clause17 in his contract to prevent him from releasing any solo singles when he left Take That

Variously legal battles followed until finally, on June 27th 1996 Robbie held a press conference18 at a London hotel where he announced his contract with BMG was ending and he had signed to “Chrysalis Records

His first solo single Freedom was released on July 29th 1996, exactly one year after his departure from Take That It reached No 2 in the UK charts, narrowly beaten by the Spice Girls

Life began to get a bit rough for Robbie during the following months He met Jacquie Hamilton Smith at a New Years Eve party of 1996, moved in with19 her the next day and partied for exactly one year before coming to his senses20

In the middle of all this he released his second single “Old Before I Die” on April 14th 1997 which also reached No 2 in the charts

At the beginning of June 1997 after many bad reports in the media21, following the advice of his friends, Robbie checked himself into a rehabilitation clinic22 in Salisbury to undergo treatment23 for his addiction24 to alcohol and drugs After 4 weeks at the center he emerged25 as a slim figure, with a new short haircut and a smiling face Fans were delighted to see this transformation, and his return to normality26 will be an example to others who find themselves in such a position


December 1997 was the real beginning for Rob, he released “Angels” as his Christmas single, never knowing quite what an impact27 it would have on the market Into the new year of 1998 it was still in the charts Robbie truly had arrived, signing thousands of fans daily

He began to gain respect from every quarter of the music business and, with songs from the last album “Ive Been Expecting You” gaining even more credibility28 in the pop world, he showed that he definitely was NOT the next Andrew Ridgely29! “Ive Been Expecting You” and “When Youre Winning” have made Robbie a superstar
