Making TV Help Your Kids If you know how to use television, it can be an invaluable teaching tool for your kids. We have all been warned that television is a bad influence on children-lowering their school grades. But the experts said that it can numb children’s minds or expand them. They found that youngsters who do best in school watch about ten hours of TV a week, and those who watch more or less score lower. With the abundance of programs now on TV, it’s increasingly difficult to control what kids are viewing. But it can be done. Here’s how to make sure your children are benefited rather than harmed by television. 1. Start monitoring early. A typical child begins watching television by age two and half. By four, he or she may be watching three or more hours a day. These early years are the time when families pass on values such as honesty, generosity, aspiration and kindness. Television may introduce different values. Realistically, you can’t preview every scene of every program. But a least familiarize yourself with those your child watched regularly. Don’t assume a program is rewarding or harmless, just because it’s labeled children’s show. 2. Set rules. You wouldn’t allow your seven-year-old child to choose his or her own dinner menus, would you? Parents are a child’s gatekeepers. They are the final authority on what can and can’t be watched. So set the TV rules and stick to them. Firstly, choose carefully where your TV is located. It should neither be in a child’s room, nor should it be near the dinner table. The best location is where parents can cast an eye on the screen from time to time. Secondly, set time limited for watching. Ten hours a week is enough for school kids. There should be a good reason to extend viewing beyond two hours in a single day, such as an after-school special or a wonderful child’s movie. Once TV rules have been established, make sure they have been understood by the whole family. Inform baby-sitters or relatives who may provide child care. 3. Watch TV together. Children will learn more when viewing with adults, even from kid’s show. When drawing up a schedule, seek out programs the family can enjoy together. Insist on variety. Don’t let kids overload on cartoons, game shows or sitcoms. This kind of side-by-side viewing can help you understand what the kids consider terrific or disappointing, and it can also help them distinguish between quality and junk. 4. Tie TV to other activities. Reading and television are sometimes thought of as enemies. Yet TV can inspire interest in books and turn children into devoted readers. When a TV version of a book is scheduled, encourage your kids to read the book first, or follow up the program by having them read it afterwards. Or after viewing animals, take children to the zoo. Try to tie TV to other activities.
