One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goalto photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world” — the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.

Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears — like all wild animals — should be photographed from a safe distance. When I’m face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.

As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.

The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.

Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though — he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).

I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter(相遇), I took some pictures of the bear.

Elli and I feared the fence wouldn’ t last through 30 more minutes of the bear’s punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears’ eyes, but doesn’t hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.

Paragraph1:A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. Paragraph2:At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. Eyes swollen, the bear let out a deafening roar.

Flames of anger burning in the eyes, the bear burst out roaring. Roars and growls pierced the silence of this frozen area.

The bear launched a fiercer attack on the fence than ever before.

tore down the fence fiercely smashed the fence violently

struck the fence with violent force beat the fence with his massive paws

slammed the fence frantically bit the fence with his sharp teeth desperately destroyed the fence madly but the crack remained too small for him to go through 1.

The angry bear smashed the poor fence once and once again.

With two bloodshot eyes, the bear let out a deafening roar and violently struck the fence with his full strength.

He exposed his sharp teeth, snarling (咆哮) at us.

The furious creature stood on his back legs and began to strike the fence like a demon. 5.

It seemed that his mouth was dripping with blood and his eyes were red with rage.

Elli害怕 The growling nearly frightened her to death.

A flush of fear welled up inside her. Fear flooded over her.

A sense of panic swept over her. She was in great panic.

She was overwhelmed/overcome/seized with panic.

Apparently swallowed by a wave of despair, Ellis crossed fingers, closed eyes and prayed in a shivering voice.

Elli was stunned, her mouth hanging open.

Elli行动 spray the bear to scare him off, but in vain

Elli fetched the spray, only to find it empty. be thoroughly at a loss what to do

Terror and despair instantly crept upon me.

Heart froze in my chest.

A chill spilled down my spine. A sense of terror enveloped me.

I was aware that my stomach began to ache acutely .

我行动

Heart in mouth, I had no alternative but to do something for survival. threw bread at the bear

I ventured to photograph the clumsy bear as he was feasting on the leftovers. 6.

The heavy growl of the bear almost made our hearts miss a beat. 7.

We were forced to flee separately to escape the outrageous claws.

He ate the bread up in a blink of an eye. 面包 Apparently, the tiny snack didn’t satisfy his appetite.

Again, he settled down to tearing down the fence with his full strength. The trembling fence seemed to 攻击 collapse at any moment.

The trembling fence was on the verge of collapsing.

At that very moment, the helicopter arrived.

Its appearance to us was what the raindrops to the withering flowers. At the sight of the helicopter, I breathed a deep sigh of relief. At the sight of the helicopter, a surge of relief swept over me.

Overjoyed and relieved, we waved desperately at the descending helicopter. The loud noise made by the helicopter startled him, but he remained there.

A man shot at the bear with a needle. It hit the bear in the leg accurately. In a flash, the bear lay on the ground, sleepy and faint. After giving the bear some brief treatment, all of us got into the helicopter. Food was dropped to the ground, which appealed to the bear deeply.

Ignoring the loud noise made by the helicopter, it began to eat greedily. A rope ladder was lowered from the helicopter.

We grasped the rope lowered from the helicopter above and were lifted into the air. Thrilled yet relieved, we grasped the rope and eventually landed on the helicopter . 8.

We breathed a sigh of relief/gasped with relief.

Exhausted yet relieved , I climbed into the helicopter, hugging Elli tightly . Miraculously, no sooner had we got into the helicopter than the bear came to life.

We raised our camera and photographed the lonely bear, hoping him to be safe and sound. Aggressive as the bear is, the bear with a full stomach won’t hurt humans.

Whenever we see the pictures, they will definitely remind us of the narrow escape. The pictures were our precious reminder of the unforgettable experience. If only humans and animals could construct a harmonious bond!

Humans will be blessed with more by treating animals with a kind heart than a vicious one. While overlooking at the bear, I spotted that the fence had been crushed by the stubborn guy.

Gazing at the melting ice field, I wondered if it was the climate change that had forced the bear into such a hungry state.

Had it not been for the helicopter’s timely rescue, we might not have survived the bear’s massive paws. It was a thrilling narrow escape, but as I developed the film later, it all just became worthwhile.

Paragraph 1: A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. With great rage, the bear roared and tried to tear down the fence with all his might. I gathered up courage and tried to spray him again. Unfortunately, he managed to escape and my heart froze in my chest. At this moment, Elli came up with a crazy idea, and threw our garlic bread at the bear. To my great surprise, the bear stopped and bowed toward to eat the bread. Seeing this, all of us let out a sigh of relief. Before long, however, the hungry bear finished eating and pulled the fence again. The fence was about to fall down.

Paragraph 2: At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. Shocked by the noises, the bear flinched/withdrew/froze. Seeing the helicopter landing on a clearing, he ran away and disappeared into the woods. We finally took a deep breath and embraced tightly with still racing hearts. After we calmed down, the locals told us that the bears were losing their homes and food because of human activities and climate changes. On the way back home, I checked the precious pictures in the camera, lost in thought. The experience would be remembered, forever.
