大学英语四级范文:长假

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Long Holidays. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese:

  1. 长假给大学生带来的好处

  2. 长假可能给大学生带来的问题

  3. 我应当怎样利用好长假

  【范文】

  Long Holidays

Generally speaking, long holidays are good for us college students. On the one hand, we have a lot of time to study by ourselves and thus improve weaknesses and further develop strengths. On the other hand, we can take part-time jobs, which can make us realize responsibility and make ourselves better prepared for social life.

But every coin has two sides. Some students fail to make good use of their time and they are addicted to various computer games. I am afraid that they are likely to ruin themselves in this way.

As far as I am concerned, I will try to make the best use of my precious time. I will spend most of my holidays studying English for that I am very poor at it. In addition, I will take a part-time job as private teacher. By this means, I can earn some money and put my knowledge into practice as well.

Chinese Americans

Most of today’s Chinese Americans are descendants of some of the early miners and railroad workers. Those immigrants had come from the vicinity of Canton in Southeast China, where they had been uneducated farm laborers. The same kind of young men, from the same area and from similar humble origins, migrated to Hawaii in those days.

There they fared far better, mainly because they did not encounter hostility. Some married native Hawaiians, and others brought their wives and children over. They were not restricted to Chinatowns, and many of them soon became successful merchants and active participants in general community affairs.Chinese Americans retain many aspects of their ancient culture, even after having lived here for several generations. For example, their family ties continue to be remarkably strong.Members of the family lend each other moral support and also practical help when necessary.

From a very young age children are imbued with the old values and attitudes, including respect for their elders and a feeling of responsibility to the family. This helps to explain why there is so little juvenile delinquency among them. The high regard for education which is deeply rooted in Chinese culture, and the willingness to work very hard to gain advancement, are other noteworthy characteristics of theirs. This explains why so many descendants of uneducated laborers have succeeded in becoming doctors, lawyers, and other professionals.

Chinese Americans make up only a tiny fraction of our population;there are fewer than half a million, living chiefly in California, New York, and Hawaii. As American attitudes toward minorities and toward ethnic differences have changed in recent years, the long-reviled Chinese have gained wide acceptance.Today, they are generally admired for their many remarkable characteristics, and are often held up as an example worth following. And their numerous contributions to their adopted land are much appreciated.

大学英语四级范文:What Happened to Sunday?

Today our life and work rarely feel light, pleasant or healing.Instead, the whole experience of being alive begins to melt into one enormous obligation. It becomes the standard greeting everywhere:“I am so busy.”We say this to one another with no small degree of pride. The busier we are, the more important we seem to ourselves and,we imagine, to others.

To be unavailable to our friends and family,to be unable to find time for the sunset,to whiz through our obligations without time for a single mindful breath —this has become the model of a successful life.Because we do not rest, we lose our way.We lose the nourishment that gives us help.We miss the quiet that gives us wisdom.Poisoned by the belief that good things come only through tireless effort,we never truly rest. This is not the world we dreamed of when we were young.

How did we get so terribly rushed in a world saturated with work and responsibility, yet somehow bereft of joy and delight? We have forgotten the Sabbath.Sabbath is the time to enjoy and celebrate what is beautiful and good —time to light candles, sing songs, worship, tell stories, bless our children and loved ones, give thanks, share meals, nap, and walk.It is time to be nourished and refreshed as we let our work, our chores and our important projects lie fallow, trusting that there are larger forces at work taking care of the world when we are at rest.

Sabbath is more than the absence of work. Many of us, in our desperate drive to be successful and care for our many responsibilities feel terrible guilt when we take time to rest. But the Sabbath has proven its wisdom over the ages. Many of us still recall when, not long ago, shops and offices were closed on Sundays. Those quiet Sunday afternoons are embedded in our cultural memory.
