Smoking As we all know, many people fall into the habit of smoking, which do a lot of harm to them. It is said that less than one-fourth of all U.S. Adults, adolescents and over one third of Chinese aged older than 15 choose to smoke.Why are so many people addicted to the cigarettes and tobacco? For adolescents,too much peer pressure may bring them some negative moods,which cause them to smoke for relaxation of releasing the pressure. On the other hand, there are also some objective reasons. Positive media images and advertising influence them gradually. They form the view that smoking is a kind of risk-taking and rebellious lifestyle. For adults, they seem to have more varieties of reasons. Some say that they view smoking just as a way of stimulation. Cigarettes have the function to perk themselves up. Sometimes adults take out cigarettes not to smoke but just for the enjoyment of handing a cigarette or watching the smoke when exhale it. Similar to adolescents, adults may also smoke for pleasurable relaxation. Everyone has stress no matter kids or adults. What’s more,lighting up a cigarette can reduce the uncomfortable and upset feeling. However, a large majority of people feel it hard to quit smoking. Once people form the habit of smoking, they can not run out of cigarettes. They even can not stand the awareness of the fact that they are not smoking a cigarette. To put it briefly, the habit of smoking has become a part of their lives. They light up a cigarette without any realization. However, smoking do harm to people’s health. Statistics shows that tobacco use is the NO.1 cause of preventable death with 4000000 deaths a year. As we all know, tobacco use is the culprit of different kinds of cancer and diseases such as cardiovascular disease,respiratory disorders,facial wrinkling and so on. Since smoking has such serious effects, methods must be taken to reduce smoking rates. People had better quit smoking without therapy. If one can not tolerate feeling without tobacco, he can try to use nicotine replacement. To quit smoking, receiving a psychological intervention is also a good way. It is adoptable that more people to participate in community campaigns no matter who. To deal with this problem, our class has a debate on weather we should ban smoking in public places. The pros holds the view that we should have ban for smoking in public places. First ,smoking affect not only smokers but others’ health. Humans’ health is more important than economy development. Second, lighting a cigarette may cause safety problems and make mistakes. Third, smoking also pollute the environment. On the contrary, the cons stand on the other side. They think we should not ban smoking in public places. First, smokers have the right to express themselves. Second, if we ban smoking, workers in tobacco industry will lose their jobs. Therefore,economy development will be limited. Third, we ought to care about smokers and leave room for them. The debate is so fierce that we all forget about the time. As far as I am concerned, the smoking rate is a serious problem in current society. All we need to do is caring about ourselves’ and others’ health. Non-smokers should control themselves not to fall into the habit of smoking. As for smokers, they should pay attention to others’ feelings.
