Section B A Healthy lifestyle, the Chinese Way Good morning, dear judges! I’m No.2 candidate for junior high English teacher. The topic of my class today is A Healthy lifestyle, the Chinese Way. This short passage is chosen from Section B of unit 2 in book 8, published by People’s Education Press. The lesson is focused on the point of how to keep a healthy body. The first part mainly tells the concepts of yin and yang in traditional Chinese way; and the last part emphasizes the importance of eating a balanced diet. This course gets students to be familiar with language points connected with health, as well as making them aware of traditional Chinese healthy issues. After the analysis of text, we have to consider the situation of Students. Students f Junior 2 grade have certain foundation of English learning, they are equipped with basic reading skills, and eager to learn more about Chinese culture. But, Students of this age are easy to be distracted for unfamiliar reading material, so, this course aims to broaden their horizon by introducing fascinating Chinese culture and make sure they can master new words and phrases. Based on the situation of Students, the teaching objectives can be decided as follows: for knowledge objective, Students are enabled to grasp vocabulary and phrases about health, such as herbs, Chinese medicine; method objectives are to strengthen Students’ competence of giving advices, esp. with the pattern” you should”; as for emotion objective, it aims to arouse their healthy consciousness and help them learn to care about people’s health. Since we have the objectives above, we can discover that the teaching key points include basic vocabulary, phrases and sentence patterns; while the teaching difficult points are to use freely the new content in daily communication, as well as learning to give suggestions. In addition, during the teaching process, I will make timely evaluation for Students’ learning effect. This evaluation, mainly formative, will run through the whole teaching activity. For instance, the students will be proposed the question, “how to give advices about health”, for this kind of new content, I will firstly search the answer from Students with better language skills, in this way, their right answer make me aware of the complexity of the material and they’ll be encouraged to think deeply about health; next, I prepare to invite Students of limited reading ability to answer it, so as to know their difficulties in understanding. If they feel hard, I will make easier the content still related to the topic and lead them to learn more about health. If they successfully give the right reply, I will praise them immediately and encourage them to think carefully about the harder point. According to the analysis made above, I would like to adopt three teaching methods, namely task-based, communicative and audio-visual methods. They are generally carried out in the form of games, questions and multimedia materials, therefore, the enthusiasm of Students can be improved in no time, while their creative ability and cooperative spirit are developed as well. On the basis of the teaching methods, there are six steps included in the teaching procedure. For leading-in step, a game of drawing picture will be implemented, and the picture contains three circles and one S-line, like this on the blackboard; the students are encouraged to draw it on their textbook. Not only does my describing in English helps practicing Students’ listening ability, but also the Students’ interests about health can be aroused. Step two is pre-reading, I will get Students to think about the possible content based on the title “A Healthy Lifestyle, the Chinese Way”, and guess textual information by showing the picture of yin-yang. In this way, the Students’ thinking ability can be improved and they are thus prepared for the understanding of the text. By the way, new words of the text will be presented on the screen, and two groups of the students will compete in reading aloud the words. During while-reading step, I will firstly play the tape of the text, so as to help Students get certain information about text and encourage them to tell me anything new they got from the material. Next, students will do fast reading with the purpose of selecting two groups of words related to yin and yang separately, and fill them in the picture, like this ” tired, weak, stressed out, angry” and “tofu, beef”. Then, questions like ”how to give advices about health”, “why people feel tired or angry” will be raised, and students are to do intensive reading, while sentence pattern like “you should eat more yang food” will be explained. This part is beneficial for the improvement of Ss’ listening, reading and self-study competence. Post-reading step mainly consists of True or False questions on the screen, and students are also encouraged to retell the passage with the help of materials on the blackboard, so as to ensure the complete comprehension of the language points and practice their speaking ability. As for Summary step, I will use the question “what have you learnt from the lesson” in order to get students consolidate the new words, patterns and ideas of the text all by themselves, and information will be added as necessary. Last, students will be assigned the homework of writing a report about the health of people around you and try to give them advices. Speaking of the whole teaching activity, the drawing game inside teaching procedure plays a crucial role in catching the attention of students, as well as presenting vague idea of the text; besides, even though this course set the goal of practicing reading ability, the activities and each procedure enable Ss to develop all the four basic language skills, that is listening, speaking, reading and writing.
