Unit 5

Teaching Objectives:

1. To remember and use new words and expressions; 2. To have general ideas of “financial management;

3. To review some basic reading skills and learn some word formations; 4. To know about the word formations of Business English vocabulary; 5. To deal with the language points in Text A and Text B.

Focuses:

1. To review some basic reading skills;

2. To have general ideas of “financial management” by reading to practice basic reading skills; 3. To learn some word formations and deal with the language points in Text A and Text B.

Difficulties:

Review how to use basic reading skills to do reading exercises.

Teaching Time: 2 periods. Teaching Procedures:

Part I Pre-reading Questions

It can be used as lead-in questions. For students, they can discuss with each other and will have free answers. Part II Extensive Reading

In this part, there are two texts and their relevant exercises. By reading the texts in limited time, Teacher

helps students understand the contents and the reading methods to build reading abilities gradually.

1. Text A Ways to Keep More Cash

a. Let the students read Text A as quickly as they can for the first time to get the general idea; b. Ask students to tell others the general idea of the text;

c. Then use some basic reading skills to read through the text again to find the answers to Exercise I; d. Check the answers to Exercise I; e. Analyze the language points in the text:

1. Bureau of the Public Debt: 公共债务局, 成立于1940630,其主要职责是筹措联邦政府所需的款项,核算公共债

2. Text B When Stocks Tank, Some Investors Stampede to Alpacas

a. Several minutes for students to use some basic reading skills to read the text only once, then ask them to do Exercise I;

b. Check the answers to Exercise I; c. Point out some language points:

念是与软资产(Soft Assets)和纸面资产(Paper Assets)相对的,软资产一般耐久性比较弱,而纸面资产一般指证券或现金,是虚拟资产,并不切实存在。 目前,投资界一般认为以下资产属于硬资产:贵金属;基本金属(包括黑色金属和有色金属);能源(主要是指化石能源);房地产;森林产品(主要是指木材)

4. IRAs: Individual Retirement Accounts, 个人退休金账户。它是美国商业银行1974年为没有参加“职工退休计划”的工人创设的一种新型储蓄存款账户。按照规定,只要工资收入者每年在银行存入2000美元,其存款利率就可以不受《Q字条例》的限制,且可暂时享受免税优惠,直到存户退休以后,再按其支取的金额计算所得税。

d. Assign Exercises II and III as their homework.

Part III Reading Skills

Before dealing with Text A and Text B, ask students to read through the whole passage of reading skill, to

lead them to understand the details about word formations, especially asking them to pay special attention to the examples.

Part IV Supplementary Reading: On Breaking Rules

Ask students to read it in a limited time after class, and then write a summary. Part V Test Yourself

Ask students to do it and check the answers by themselves. Questions for Discussion and Reflection:

1. How do you do your financial management?

2. In your opinion, what are the ways to keep more cash?

Assignments

1. Write a short summary of about 50 words to express the main idea of Supplementary Reading; 2. Finish all exercises in Text A and Text B.
