The Answer Is a Click-Away Can’t decide whether to dump your boyfriend, move house or sell your car?The answer may be just a click-away.Two British men and three women will let the Internet play God for 15 days by handing over their daily, sometimes life-changing decisions, to a potential jury of 12.7 million people,Internet news portal MSN said in a statement. The five people were chosen as part of a project to give the Internet a chance to help ordinary people make important daily decisions.
This latest venture comes three decades after the publication of Luke Rhinehart’s best-selling book “The Dice Man”,the story of a man who gives up his control of life to the dice, and follows the worldwide success of reality TV show “Big Brother”.Each of the five will put a decision a day to the Internet community and will have to act on the outcome of the decision, although they will be given a “joker”—meaning they can back out of one decision —during the period, MSN said.Internet users around the world will be able to vote on the decisions each day by visiting www.liveyourlife.msn.co.uk.
A dedicated site has been created around each participant, giving information about their backgrounds, their loves, hates, hopes and daily diary updates. At the end of the 15 days, web users will decide which of the five has let the Internet live their life to the maximum and he or she will win 10,000 pounds. In the past people tended to rely on dice or some fortune books to decide their next action.Nowadays it seems a popular trend to express their problems on the Internet to seek help. But is it really beneficial to make decisions based on the Internet?Or we’d better depend on ourselves and be responsible for our own lives.

In America, we value individuality and like to think that everyone is different. It is expected that most youth will be somewhat rebellious sometime around college age.Youthful rebellion is often seen as a healthy and normal groping toward individuality, especially as needed to become distinct from one’s parents. The rebelliousness may be related to major social issues —peace, or racial justice, as we had in the late 1960s.On the other hand, normal, healthy rebelliousness may be an individual test of the line between foolishness and trouble.Early teens may try to shock and worry their parents.
Tattoos, pierced noses, and brightly colored hair are examples.By college age, students may be expected to be testing broader social norms.Of particular delight are actions that point out the hypocrisy of older generations.Streaking, or “running naked through a public place”,is a fine example of that kind of testing.Public nudity is widely condemned by officialdom and can be punished. However, as long as the streaker escapes without being caught, streaking is clearly harmless;one would be sorry to miss seeing a given instance.Streaking is a fad.
A fad allows everyone to demonstrate how different he is — in the same way.Fads wear out. Fads come and go.Streaking became a fad in the fall of 1973,soon making national headlines. It faded out and then came back in the 80’s and again in the 90’s.On at least one campus (Princeton University, a highly respected school),a form of streaking has become a tradition. Each year at midnight on the night of the first snow, nude sophomores run around Princeton’s Holder Courtyard. The tradition has taken hold to an extent that it gets favorable treatment in the national press, and official attempts to end the practice get no public support.

Even if the word “pop” disappears from the English vocabulary, the influence of pop will remain.Pop has become part of British — and American — history. There has always been a close cultural link, or tie, between Britain and English peaking America, not only in literature but also in the popular arts, especially music. Before the Second World War the American exported jazz and the blues.During the 1950s they exported rock and roll, and star singers like Elvis Presley were idolized by young Britons and Americans alike.
The people responsible for the pop revolution were four Liverpool boys who joined together in a group and called themselves the Beatles.Unlike the famous solo stars who had their songs written for them,They played in small clubs in the back streets of the city.the Beatles wrote their own words and music. They had a close personal relationship with their audience, and they expected them to join in and dance to the “beat” of the music.Audience participation is an essential characteristic of pop culture. Some pop groups, in particular the Rolling Stones, did more than just entertainment.
They wrote words which were deliberately intended to shock. They represented the anger and bitterness of youth struggling for freedom against authority, and for this reason they were regarded by some people as the personification of the “permissive society”.The Beatles, on the other hand, finally won the affection — and admiration —of people of all ages and social backgrounds. As they developed, their songs became more serious. They wrote not only of love, but of death and old age and poverty and daily life. They were respected by many intellectuals and by some serious musicians.Largely thanks to the Beatles, pop music has grown into an immense and profitable occupation.
