Different countries have different values

In Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory, individualism-collectivism is one of cultural dimensions. Regarding the individualism index, there is a clear gap between eastern and Western countries. North America and Europe can be considered as individualistic with relatively high scores: for example, 91 for America. In contrast, Asia, Africa and Latin America have strong collectivistic values: Hong Kong scores only 25 points on the IDV (Individualism) scale, and Taiwan 17. (Hofstede :Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory) Therefore, America is an “individualist” society, which means they are more independent and free. While China is a “collectivist” society, so they care more about society as a whole. And there are many differences between America and China in the way of thinking, the dress in school and the sense of belonging and honor of the group.

First, it is a great difference between America and China in the way of thinking. For example, in 2001, cultural psychologist Richard Nisbett did a cross-cultural experiment. He showed American two pictures, one is about a chicken and a cow; another one is a heap of hay and a cow. Most of American would choose the first one, because they are animals. However, most of Asian would choose the second one, because cows need to eat hay. (Richard Nisbett, “The Geography of Thought”) So we can know Americans care more about categories, there is a loose relationship between each others. And they will care more about themselves, which is individualism. However, Chinese care more about relationship, which means that they will care more about the society and their big family. And they are loyal members of their groups. Secondly, the dress in school is different between China and America. For instance, in 1990s, President Clinton suggested American public schools should enforce the rules on school uniform, which can improve the study environment and school security. But lots of people were against it, because they thought it will limit students creation and personality development. And children had their right and freedom to express themselves. Besides, Yeung did a survey, which hardly proved that uniforms can improve school security and students study. But in China, as for me, we need to

wear a school uniform in high school every day, so we all look the same. If you wear some special clothes in school, you will be punished. Besides, many other students will think you are a bad student. Therefore, Americans think more about themselves and have more freedom, and they can express their identity. But uniforms can strengthen our awareness of mates’ ship and unity. Chinese wear school uniforms, caring more about groups and society.

Third, there is a great difference between China and America in the sense of belonging and honor of the group. In the sport games, Americans won for themselves, and American champions thought because of their hard work, they could win. While Chinese would fight for their country, not themselves. When they won, they also thought the because of their and their team members, and each Chinese’s effort, they can won. So Americans think success belongs to themselves, which care more about themselves. While Chinese think success belongs to collectivity and others help, which means they will think more about others than themselves.

All in all, America is an “individualist” society while China is a “collectivist” society, because the way of thinking, the dress in school and the sense of belonging and honor of the group are really different. But it is hard to say which one is better, because different countries have different cultures and different values.
