Possible article: English Class: A Language-Diversity Perspective As an AI language model, I do not attend school or take classes, but I can analyze millions of texts and

conversations to help people learn and communicate better. Based on my observations and linguistic knowledge, here are some thoughts on the role of English in modern Chinese

education, and how to embrace its diversity and significance. 1. English as a global language English has become a lingua franca, or a common means of communication, in various fields such as academia, business, technology, and entertainment. More than a billion people worldwide speak English to some extent, and about half of the Internet content is in English. Therefore, learning English can help students broaden their horizons, connect with people from different cultures, and access more information and opportunities than just using Chinese. However, English is not the only global language, nor the most important one in some cases. For instance, Mandarin Chinese is the most spoken first language in the world, and other languages like Spanish, French, Arabic, and Russian have a significant influence on regional and international affairs. Moreover, English is not homogeneous but varies in accents, dialects, vocabularies, and expressions across

different countries and regions. Therefore, teaching English should not ignore other languages, and should promote a culture of language diversity and mutual respect.

2. English as an academic subject English is also a core subject in most Chinese schools, from primary to tertiary education. This means that students have to learn English grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, and practice for various

standardized tests such as CET, TOEFL, and IELTS. The purpose of English as an academic subject is to help students achieve competence and proficiency in using English for academic and professional purposes, and to prepare them for a potential overseas study or work. However, English learning should not be limited to a test-oriented mindset or a functional purpose. English is also a language of art, philosophy, communication, and

identity. Students should learn English not only to get high scores, but also to appreciate the beauty and diversity of English literature, poetry, film, music, and culture.

Moreover, English can be a means of self-expression, personal growth, and social connection, as well as a way of promoting intercultural understanding and global citizenship. 3. English as a medium of instruction In recent years, more Chinese schools and universities have adopted English as a medium of instruction (EMI) for some courses, especially in STEM fields, business, and social sciences. This means that students have to learn and use English to understand the lectures, textbooks, assignments, and discussions in their major subjects, and to interact with foreign teachers and classmates. EMI has its advantages and challenges. On the one hand, EMI can enhance students' English proficiency, international exposure, and competitiveness in the job market. On the other hand, EMI can also create barriers to learning, such as
