An insightful fortune teller

In ancient China, a fortune teller was famous for his accurate divinations. He always gave unmistakable divinations for his amazing insight towards people’s oral and facial expressions. Every day crowds of people would consult him for solutions to their problems.

One day a farmer came to the fortune teller in a hurry. “Sir, couldyou please tell me how to solve this problem,” the farmer asked politely. “My family lost acow which is very valuable because it can produce much milk and even enough meat for the whole family.”

The fortune teller squinted at the farmer and replied calmly, “Where is your wife now?”

Though confused by the weird question, the farmer told him the whole matter exactly as it had happened:“I had a quarrel with my wife last night and she got so angry with me that she went back toher parents’ home in the east villagebefore I got up this morning.”

Then the fortune teller held the farmer’s palm, made some strange gestures repeatedly and kept muttering.“You will certainly get your cow back,” he said confidently. “Go east and take an hour’s walk, you will find your cow eating grass in a farmland there.”

“Really?” the farmer responded dubiously. Sure enough, he found his cow was pulled awayby his wife and finallyhe brought his cow back and expressed sincere appreciation to the fortune teller. From then on, the fortune teller developed a flourishing business and earned a lot of money. Several days later, a neighbor of the fortune teller rushed to his divination stall. “Someone broke into your house and stole almost everything!”

The fortune teller was astonished and rushed home as quickly as he could. His house was totally a mess and the 200 gold coins he earned from his divination business were gone. Suddenly he sat on the ground and burst out crying.

The neighbor asked him, “You are such an insightful fortune teller, why not make use of your accurate divinations to find out your lost belongings?”
