Unit 13 Psychology

Reading-skill

1. Thesis statement: what the author wants to express by writing the paper or article, which can be found at the very beginning or in the end of the passage.

Having got the thesis statement can help us understand the passage more comprehensively.

2. Topic sentences: to make readers get what the author wants to express and how his paper is organized, the author will write several paragraphs in a writing, which are well organized. In each paragraph, there is such kind of sentence giving or implying the main idea of the paragraph.

3. Guide Ss to find the thesis statement and topic sentence of the example passage.

Study the Text

1. Word-pretest

Give Ss 5m to guess the words' meaning in the given context. Hierarchy: monarchy

Companionship: company-- companied with sb---firm Die of starvation---starve/toil/cold to death Sustain-sustainable and scientific development

2. Read the text in 10m and try to present the hierarchy of human needs in their own word. After reading the passage, try to remember the hierarchy in brief and get known how this hierarchy is applied into business.

3. Invite some volunteers to present their understanding of different needs. 4. Spot the topic and topic sentence of each paragraph.(the first sentence)

5. Let one S read out his/her answers to the exercise of reading comprehension and others to correct him/her.

Prefix

1. Let Ss open their dictionary to find out words start with the prefix. 2. Choose some to remember in class

Psy- : psyche, psychology, psychologist(scientist, artist, dentist), psychotherapy

Uni- unique, uniform (form), unify, united, union

Multi- : multiple, multiply (add, subtract, divise), multinational (international), multilateral (bilateral)

Section B Fast- reading and Presenting

1. Divide the class into 4 groups, and each group is assigned to read one passage in the SECTION B and then one S should stand up to be on behalf of his group and present the main ideas or information of the passage in several sentences. It would be better to pick up the topic sentence of each paragraph to show the main idea of the whole passage.

2. Give Ss time to prepare and inspire them to show his understanding

Section C Check the Comprehension of Section C

Ask Ss to read the text once again and try to explain the words in bold or change them into a question separately and then answers them one by one. Introduction- Is human beings' behaviour hereditary or learned?

The distinction is not always clear for the effect of environment begins immediately after birth.

Limitations of animal behaviour: what are the limitations of animal behaviour? Their behaviour is automatic and instinctive

Adaptability of man- how does man adapt his ability to live better?

Man has intelligence to solve problems and the motivation to seek the solutions. Drives- drives make people have the motivation to satisfy man's needs.

Drive control- people know how to control and in what situation they have to control their needs so as to achieve a greater and long-term satisfaction.

1. Finish the remaining exercise.
