  1.every adj.每,每个,每隔…的

  every cloud has a silver lining 事情总是一分为二的,坏事也不一定都坏

  例句:Bill has lost his job, which is a great blow to him, but his redundancy payment is very substantial. Every cloud has a silver lining.

  比尔丢掉了他的工作,这对他是一个沉重的打击,但他的解雇费却不少。所以说坏事也不全坏。

  every Jack has his Jill(或Gill)<谚>人各有偶;每个男人都会找到自己台适的伴侣

  例句:"Every jack has his Jill" is a late derivation of an old children's nursery rhyme(a poem for children)that means "every person has the perfect mate out there somewhere (for him or her)".

  "Every Jack has his Jill" 来源于一首旧的儿童诗歌,意思是“有情人终成眷属”。

  every once in a while 有时(参见every now and then)

  例句:

  Come to the movies with us. Everybody needs to take a break every once in a while.

  一块儿去看电影吧。每个人有时都需要休息一会儿。

  A:Do you ever think of changing your major to art?

  A:你有没有想过转成艺术专业?

  B:Every once in a while.

  B:有时候想过。

  every other 每隔...(do sth. at an interval of...)

  例句:

  1.Our club meets every other Wednesday.

  2.Once every other month, the drama club puts on a play.

  3.Tara goes to her singing class every other day: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

  A:Do you have to work overtime on your job?

  B:Every so often I do.

  B:有时候。

  2.hot adj. 1.热的2.辣的3.热情的,激动的

  hot air 吹牛的废话

  例句:Don't take any notice of what he said. It's nothing but hot air.

  别在意他说些什么。那只是吹牛的废话。

  3.rain n. 1.雨 vi. 下雨

  rain cats and dogs 倾盆大雨

  例句:It's raining cats and dogs outside.

  外面下着倾盆大雨。

  rain check 露天体育比赛因下雨改期再赛时作为入场券的原票票根;(邀请方在受邀方一时不能应邀时)下次再邀的表示,邀请继续有效昀保证;(受邀方一时不能应邀时的)请对方下次再邀的要求。

  A:Can you come over for dinner tonight?

  A:今天晚上过来吃晚饭吗?

  B:I'm up to my ears in work, so I'll have to take a rain check.

  B:我特别忙。下一次吧。

  rain in buckets 雨下得很大

  例句:It's raining down in buckets.

  外面雨下得很大。

  4.summer n. 1.夏天,夏季

  summer job 夏天的工作

  例句:Have you found a summer job yet?

  你有没有找到一份暑期工作?

  summer session 夏天的课程,暑期班很多大学都开设暑期课程,供学生选修。

  例句:Summer session will begin on June 22nd.

  暑期班6月22日开课。

  5.warm adj.1.温暖的,暖和的2.热情的,热心的

  warm up 加热;做准备运动、热身运动(become warmer; prepare for games,dancing, etc)

  例句:

  1.The band's just getting warmed up. Do you have to leave already?

  乐队刚刚热完身,你这就得走?

  2.The runners are having a quick warm-up before the race.

  赛跑运动员在比赛前做一些快速的热身运动。

  6.weather n. 1.天气,气象

  weather forecast 天气预报

  A:Will you go sailing tomorrow?

  A:明天出海航行吗?

  B:Maybe. Have you heard the weather forecast?

  B:也许吧。你有没有听天气预报?

  under the weather 身体不好,身体有点不舒服(同义习语还有:come down wiih something, down with a bug, in poor shape, out of condition, out of shape, be unwell)

  A:lt's good to see you, Mary. How have you been?

  A:见到你真高兴,玛丽。你怎么样?

  B:Actually I have been feeling under the weather recently.

  B:说实在的,我最近身体有点不舒服。

  例句:Tom caught a flu last week, and he is still a bit under the weather.

  7.winter n. 冬季

  winter break/vacation 寒假

  例句:I heard you went to Colorado skiing over the winter break.

  A:Are you going home for winter vacation?

  B:I've agreetd to stay on here as a research assistant.

  lay an egg(eggs)下蛋,生蛋(birds, insects; produce an egg or eggs)

  例句:The gay colors of the male help to attract the female and the duller colors of the female make them less likely to be caught by enemies before they have laid their eggs.

  in season 正值季节、时令(be the right season to do sth.)

  例句:I'm so happy to find that apples and oranges are in season. Give me two dozens of each.

  3.set n.1.(一)套,(一)副2.机组,接收机 vt. 1.安置2.调整3.竖立,创造 vi.(太阳)落山,下沉 adj. 不变的,固定的

  set aside 留出时间(钱)专门做某事(spare time or save money for some special purpose)

  例句:

  1.Jack used to set aside two hours every day to play golf with his father.

  杰克过去常常每天留出两个小时的时间和他父亲打高尔夫球。

  2.If you set aside a little money each month, you will be able to buy that red sport car.

  如果你每个月能留下一点钱的话,你将能买下那辆红色赛车。

  set one's mind on sth. 下决心...(resolve to do sth. determined to do sth.)

  A:Suppose the company offered you a pay rise of 50%, would you be so determined to leave and look for job elsewhere?

  B:Yes, I've set my mind on it. I'd like to find a job with full scope to show my ability.

  例句:Written work is corrected by part-time teachers who meet their students once a month to discuss their work with them and to set them on the right track.

  例句:

  eat like a pig 贪婪地吃(尤指吃时发出声音)

  例句:Mind your table manners. You are eating like a pig .

  注意你的餐桌举止。你吃饭的时候,像头猪。

  eat one's words/hat 食言;承认自己说错了话,收回前言(to take back what one has said; say the one is sorry for having said something)

  例句:

  1.He boasted that no one could beat him at tennis, but he had to eat his words after losing several games.

  2.He said that he would definitely pass the exam, but he had to eat his words after failing the exam again.

  eat up 吃光;占用,当“占用”意思时,它等于take up

  B:Chess eats up too much of my time.

  A:I wish we had more time for lunch.

  stop watch 跑表,秒表

  例句:Will you please return my stop watch?
