春节知识英语

Chinese Spring Festival is the most important

celebration in China. It falls on the 1st day of the first lunar month. It is a time of joy and reunion, usually lasting 15 days. During the festival, people usually clean their houses to welcome the New Year and new life, decorate their houses with red banners, lanterns and paper cuts, and burn incense in front of the household gods' pictures. People also exchange presents, prepare various dishes for the family

reunion dinner and set off firecrackers to ward off the evil spirits. The origin of the festival is full of legends and

stories. According to one commonly told legend, thousands of years ago, there was a violent beast called 'Year', which appears each year to attack people and cause tremendous disasters. People had no way to tame the beast and had to plead for help from the gods. To their surprise, the gods told people that they could control the 'Year' by burning bamboo stumps, displaying red banners and lighting

firecrackers. Gradually, people got rid of their fear of the 'Year' and came together to celebrate a festival full of joy and happiness. Therefore, the Chinese New Year has become a festival that symbolizes a fresh start, closely tied to traditional customs and culture. During the Spring Festival, people usually have holidays, visit their relatives, make donations and perform traditional theatrical operas. Each Chinese family has its own Spring

Festival customs. Some families will hang a picture of a bat on the door, hoping for good fortune in the coming year. Some of them will make dumplings for dinner. Others may put a fish on the dinner table, its Chinese pronunciation sounds like "abundance". People also like to make special cakes with sticky rice cake and colorful sugar. Sweet cakes and melon seeds are also a must have during the Holiday season. Chinese Spring Festival is a great traditional holiday. It is a time of enjoying the reunion and conveying people's best wishes for the future. Chinese people are attached to this festival and will pass their grand festival down from generation to generation.
