Enjoying and adoring abundant goods V.S. existing the spiritual world crisis World Warbrought the U.S.A out of the Depression and the 1950s provided most Americans with the time to enjoy long?awaited material prosperity. Yet loneliness at the top occupied a dominant theme. Due to the Truman Doctrine and the Cold War and

McCarthyism, many innocent persons were charged with“disloyalty”and were persecuted at home. People .minds were confused. Holden was fed up with the educational system, because the school taught him to read and study in order to afford“a goddam Cadillac some day”at last. Holden wanted to die many times although he admitted he was a timid boy. His gifted writer brother D.B. trying to earn money sold his writing ability to cater to Hollywood vulgar interest. Money and status were People sole chase. Holden couldn't find any joy and happiness from the society and the adult world. He felt depressed and lonesome and failed to find his path to his ideal life after his three days loiter. Holde family was very rich and he studied in a high fee primarily university, so his future

should be promising, but he was not happy, because he didn't get things he wanted most, that was the value which he emphasized and treasured such as honesty, sympathy, kindness and the love for people?totally a person was regarded as a “spiritual animal”. Unfortunately, when he began to enter the adult world, he astonishedly found his ideal was only a beautiful soap bubble. He saw through false display of affection of the headmaster clearly, meanwhile he suffered from the suicide of his unique decent

classmate. People were lacking in warmth in the modern city which was full of exhausted emotion ruined morals and money worship.

The realistic The first-person narrating way and the psychology realism The realism means the portrayal of familiar things as they really are without idealizing them in art and literature. The author depicted after the protagonist Holden a 16 years old boy was excluded from school, in order to avoid parents blaming he roamed to stay in New York

one day and two nights and finally was thrown into the mental hospital. Salinger wrote the story naturalistically and realistically, so we could see the middle?class child

depressed and hesitating spiritual world. For example, from Holden New York journey and his point of view, many places (theatre, museum, schools, inner club, park and so on) and people (parents, headmasters, classmates etc.) were presented vividly. We not only got our own understanding about peoples characters but also had insight through their behaviors and words into that society. Although Holden hated “phony” most, he couldn’t resist the corrupted and disgraceful society totally. As one of the society member he agreed to call the girl, drank the alcohol illegally, smoked the cigarette. He also told the lies to his classmate mother in the train trying to let the mother be happy about her son. In Holden inner heart, the modern city was occupied with the lost enthusiastic feeling, the ruined morality and the excessive material pursue, so he became disgusted and weary. People all treated the cars almost as their lives. If the cars have been scratched only a little, their hearts would break completely. His girlfriend Sally who just cared to wear fashionably did not agree to Holden ideal life of living in the western wild nature with radiant sunshine, fresh air and murmuring stream, which made Holden already-beating-heart injured again. His lawyer father paid close attention only to earn money and didn't mind abiding by the lawyer professional ethics. The fact that he was expelled four times could mirror the school shortcomings. His surrounding classmates didn't yearn for

knowledge and all what they did was talking of women, alcohol, sex and even organizing the small obscene clique.

Conclusion When it first came out in 1951,The Catcher in the Rye became an immediate success. It has been especially popular with the post-war young generation who have found in Holden an approximation of their own experience. The case of Holden represented a social type of adolescents thrown upon themselves in a corrupt and decadent world. The Catcher in the narrative skills have influenced many later writers especially in the realistic way: The first-person narrating way and the psychology realism, in the language use: Children argons and slang together with the rhetoric and in symbolism: giving some examples of the descriptions and images. Different youths, parents and critics commented on it from different views. There were two main entirely different opinions. Some people extolled this book, and they deemed we could deepen the understanding of youths. If youths could read this novel, they could strengthen their understanding of life and keep high vigilance of the wicked reality themselves. While other people criticized it severely. They considered that the protagonist often spoke the obscene words such as“my ass”“horse manure”,didn't study hard, smoked the cigarette and called the prostitute. What Holden did was indecent and showed disrespect to God. As a result, some parents even forbad the students to read this book; meanwhile some libraries treated this novel as a banned book. However with time going by, its place in the American literature is gradually stable and it was paid more attention by the critic circle.
