Play Report: The Miracle Worker

Overall Commentary

The Miracle Worker by William Gibson is an inspiring story of Helen Keller, how she struggled with her teacher Annie Sullivan. The movie is an ordinary movie, but the plot is dragged through most parts of film. Characters aren't lovely at all, including the main character Annie. Although she seemed to have dedication in teaching Helen, it doesn't seem that she has patience at all. Even though Helen is mute, deaf and blind, there should have been more Helen's point of view throughout the film. Especially the period when Annie takes Helen away from her family for two weeks, just having Annie and her flashback was dull and not exciting at all. Adding a little factor like that could have made the play more interesting to read.

There is boring in the beginning of the play, too much dialogue and information could be taken out of Act.1. The play should have started with Act2 of play .During Act it seemed like only exposition, until Annie actually starting to interact with Helen. There were many parts that should have been taken out. For example, the whole conversation they had about writing the letter to the doctor, to find a cure for Helen, was unnecessary. There should have been more clarification from the author; it is really confusing for readers to read with different dialogue going on the same time, that doesn’t belong in the same setting. For example, in the beginning of Act 3, the family Keller was having a conversation at the table, and the author had dialogue from Annie that was in a total different setting. There was little conversation of Annie’s brother that comes in the middle of the play, which is a bit awkward. These flashback of Annie cause many confusion for the reader, and the most important factor is that these information that was given through these flashback wasn’t necessary. The author never shows attempt to let the reader understand the different conversation going on. William Gibson gave too much information while it was not needed, and a lack of information when needed, causing the play to be a bit boring and confusing.

Characters in the play weren’t really likeable at all, Helen might be a fine character but author didn’t really add her point of view throughout the play. On the other hand, Annie was an annoying character, perhaps it was because the time period the play was set in. She had no patience towards anything, to Helen to the Keller family. It seems like everything has to go her way in the play, showing no respect to others. There were situation like not letting Mr. Keller carry her suitcase; she could have just nicely explained to Mr. Keller that there was something in the suitcase she wanted to give to Helen right away. Even though agreeing with Annie, that it was all the pity that made Helen so spoiled, but she didn’t have to be so harsh to Helen , hurting her both physically and mentally. Annie literally hit Helen when she was doing stuff not her way, taking Helen away from her family. Annie herself might have grown up in an environment that was harsh, but it doesn’t mean she should treat Helen like that too. Although in the end her way of teaching did work out, and helped Helen to be less spoiled.
