1.catch vt. 1．赶上，抓住2．患（病等）3．听懂
catch on 流行起来；理解
例句：At first，many people didn't like that kind of music，but after a while it caught on．
一开始很多人不喜欢那种音乐，但一段时间过去之后，这种音乐流行开来。

2.for hours 好几个小时，好长时间（在表示时间的名词后面加上s，前面不需要many就可以表达很多的意思，再如：for days, for weeks, for months, for years, for ages）
例句：This film seems to have been on for hours, but it started only forty-five minutes ago。
这部电影好像已经放映了几个小时了，可是它只不过是45分钟前才开演的。

3.give up 放弃，不再做了(abandon, quit)
例句：1.Mary usded to enter all the races，but now she's given up running.
以前玛丽会参加每一场赛跑的，但是现在她已不再跑了。
2.He attempted the experiment several times, but he gave up after three hours in the laboratory.
他这个实验试着做了好几次，但在实验室花了三个小时之后，他放弃了。

3.instead of instead of 没有…，而不是…(rather than)
例句：1.His method included looking at distant objects by moving the eyes from side to side instead of staring at them.
他的方法包括看远处的物体，眼球要左右运动而不是盯着它们。
2.Instead of going to the library，he went dancing．
他去跳舞了，没去图书馆。

4.spend vt. 度过，花费
spend hours on end 连续花很长时间
A:Did Linda ever finish that introductory chapter?
A:琳达到底有没有完成前言？
B:I'm not sure. She's spent hours on end rewriting it.
B:我不敢肯定。她已经一连几个小时地改写它呢。

5.waste adj. 废弃的 v. 浪费，消耗 n. 1．废物2．浪费
a waste of money 钱的浪费，浪费钱（对照a waste of time 记忆）
例句：I really felt the movie was a waste of money. didn't you?
我认为看这部电影简直是浪费钱，你呢？
