Many teachers believe that the responsibilities for (学习的责任) learning lie with (在于)the student. If a long reading assignment is given (布置阅读作业), instructors expect students to be familiar with (熟悉) the (1) information (信息) in the reading even if they do not discuss (讨论) it in class or take (进行) an examination. The (2) ideal (理想的学生) student is considered (被认为) to be one who is motivated (有学习的动力)to learn for the sake of (3) learning (为了学习而学习), not the one interested only in getting high grades (而不是为了得高分而学习). Sometimes homework is returned (4) with (带有简单的评论)brief written comments but (表示转折,却没有给分) without a grade. Even if (即便;即使没有给分)a grade is not given, the student is (5) responsible for (对….负有责任;学生也有责任学习布置的作业;或者说,学生负责学习老师布置的学习材料)learning the material assigned (布置的作业;assigned 过去分词表示被动概念,它的英文意思是“give sb. Some work or responsibility”). When research is (6) assigned (研究任务布置下来以后), the professor expects the student to take it (积极接受这个任务)actively and to complete it with (7) minimum (最低限度的指导:the smallest that is possible or allowed; extremely small。也就是说,教授希望学生尽可能限度地自己完成研究任务。)guidance. It is the student's responsibility to find books, magazines, and articles in the library. Professors do not have the time to explain (8) how a university library works (如何使用图书馆;图书馆如何运作的); they expect students (9)particularly (尤其是研究生)graduate students to exhaust the reference (10) sources (文献的原始资料,尤指书﹑ 文件等)in the library. Professors will help students who need it, but (11) prefer (更愿意)that their students should not be (12) too (太过依赖教授) dependent on them. In the United Stats professors have many other duties (13) besides (除了教学以外,教授还有其他的职责,所以用“beisdes”) teaching, such as administrative or research work. Therefore, the time that a professor can spend with a student outside of class is (14) limited (有限的). If a student has problems with (介词“with”)classroom work , the student should either (15) approach (请老师帮助ask; go to (sb) for help; to speak to sb about sth, especially to ask them for sth为求助而接近某人) a professor during office hours or make an appointment.
