They liked camping, but not near this swamp. “So,” Martin asked as they sat watching the hot coals. “How did this place get its name? ”“Are you sure you want to hear it? It’s a scary story,” warned Jack. “Of course!” cried out Tom. “If there were anything to be scared of, you “Ok, but don’t say I didn’t warn you,” said Jack, and he began this tale. “Way back in time, a man called Dennis tried to start a farm here. He built wouldn’t have chosen this place!” that cottage over there to live in . In those days, the area looked quite different ---- it was covered with tall trees and the swamp was a crystal-clear river. After three hard years, Dennis had cleared several fields and planted crops. He was so proud of his success that he refused to listen to advice. “You are clearing too much land,” warned one old man. “The land is a living “Silly fool,” said Dennis to himself. “If I clear more land, I can grow more “Dennis continued to chop down trees. He was so eager to expand his farm that he did not notice the river flowing slowly towards his door. He did not notice salt seeping to the surface of the land. He trembled, twisting “The land hit back ---- just as the old man warned” Jack shrugged. “Dennis his body closer to the fire. disappeared. Old folks around here believe that swamp plants moved up from the river and dragged him underwater. His body was never found.” “What a stupid story,” laughed Tom. “Plants can’t „” Before he had finished speaking, he screamed and fainted (晕倒). B When a magazine for high school students asked its readers what life would be like in twenty years, they said: Machines would be run by solar power. Buildings would rotate(旋转)so they could follow the sun to take maximum advantage of its light and heat. Walls would “give light” and “change color with the push of a button.” Food would be replaced by pills. School would be taught by electrical impulse(电脉冲)while we sleep. Cars would have radar(雷达). Does this sound like the year 2000? Actually, this article was written in 1958 and the question was, “what will life be like in 1978? The future is much too important to simply guess about, the way the high school students did, so experts are regularly asked to predict accuately. By carefully studying the present, skilled businessmen, scientists, and politicians are supposedly able to figure out in advance what will happen. But can they? One expert on Cities wrote: Cities of the future would not be crowded, but would have space for farms and fields. People would travel to work in “airbuses”, large all-weather helicopters carrying up to 200 passengers. When a person left the airbus station he could drive a coin-operated car equipped with radar. The radar equipment of cars would make traffic accidents “almost unheard of”. Does that sound familiar? If the expert had been accurate it would, because he was writing in 1957. His subject was “The city of 1982”. If the professionals sometimes sound like high school students, it’s probably because future study is still a new field. But economic forecasting, or predicting what the economy will do, has been around for a long time. It should be accuate, and generally it is. But there have been some big mistakes in the field, too. In early 1929, most forecasters saw an excellent future for the stock market. In October of that year, the stock market had its worst losses ever, ruining thousands of investors who had put their faith in financial foreseers. One forecaster knew that predictions about the future would always be subject to significant error. In 1957, H.J. Rand of the Rad corporation was asked about the year 2000, “Only one thing is certain,” he answered. “Children born today will have reached the age of 43.” 31. How many examples does the author offer to describe the future life? A. Three B. Four C. Five D. Six 32. The high school students’ answers to “What would life be like in 1978?” sound __________. B. No sweat, no sweet. D. He who makes no mistakes makes C. It is no use crying over spilt milk. B. He was scared by a plant D. The weather became C. His friends played a joke on him.

A. predicting about the future can be done in a humorous way B. no predictions are based on careful research C. experts are always better than others in figuring out what the future will be like D. forecasting the future is not an easy job even for experts in this field 34. From the third paragraph we can learn that _________. A. economy forecasting is rather a new field B. experts began economy forecasting in 1929 C. the predictions about economic situation caused the investors to lose lots of money D. good, accurate forecasting helped the stock market overcome the difficulties 35. H.J.Rand’s prediction about the year 2000 shows that ________. A. it is easy to figure out in advance what will happen B. it is difficult to figure out in advance what will happen C. only professionals can figure out in advance what will happen D. very few professionals figure out in advance what will happen C Blind imitation is self-destruction. To those who do not recognize their unique worth, imitation appears attractive; to those who know their strength, imitation is unacceptable. In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful. When I first learned to cook, I used recipes (菜谱) and turned out some tasty dishes. But soon I grew bored. Why follow someone else's way of cooking when I could create my own? Imitating role models is like using training wheels on a child’s bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying on them. In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously (下意识地) hold poor role models. If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did. If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results of the weak choices of others. In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off screen, their personal lives may be disastrous. If you are going to follow someone, focus on their talent, not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors. Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique. Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, not desperation. The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them. Creative people have an endless resource of ideas. The problem a creator faces is not running out of material; it is what to do with the material knocking at the door of imagination. Study your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not serve you. Then you can say,“I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors’ tragedies and declare victory, and know that they are cheering me on.” 36. Imitation proves useful when you _______. A. know you are unique B. lose the balance of life C. begin to learn something new D. get tired of routine practice 37. To avoid the bad result of imitation, we should_______. A. forget daily fear and pain B. choose the right example C. ask others for decisions D. stay away from stars 38. According to the author, the world moves on because of those who are ______. A. desperate to influence others with their knowledge B. ready to turn their original ideas into reality C. eager to discover what their ancestors did D. willing to accept others' ideas 39. The trouble a creator faces is _______. A. the lack of strong motivation B. the absence of practical ideas C. how to search for more materials D. how to use imagination creatively 40. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage? A. To highlight the importance of creativity. B. To criticize the characters of role models. C. To compare imitation with creation. D. To explain the meaning of success. D Sons who have fond childhood memories of their fathers are more likely to be emotionally stable in the face of day-to-day stresses, according to psychologists who studied hundreds of adults of all ages. “As our study shows, fathers do play a unique and important role in the mental health of their children much later in life,” psychology professor Melanie Mallers of California State University said. For this study, 912 adult men and women between the ages of 25 and 74 completed short daily telephone interviews about that day’s experiences over an eight-day period. The interviews focused on the participants’ psychological and emotional distress (痛苦) (i.e.whether they were nervous, sad, etc.) and if they had experienced any stressful events that day. The participants were also required to answer questions such as, “How would you rate your relationship with your mother during the years when you were growing up?” and “How much time and attention did your mother give you when you needed it?” The same questions were asked about fathers. People who reported they had a good mother-child relationship reported three percent less psychological distress compared to those who reported a poor relationship, according to Mallers. Men who reported having a good relationship with their fathers during childhood were more likely to be less emotional when reacting to stressful events in their current daily lives than those who had a poor relationship, according to her findings. Also, the quality of mother and father relationships was significantly associated with how many stressful events the participants faced on a daily basis. In other words, if they had a poor childhood relationship with both parents, they reported more stressful incidents over the eight-day study when compared to those who had a good relationship with their parents. Mallers explained why healthy or unhealthy relationships may have an effect on how people handle stress as adults. “Perhaps having caring parents equips children with the experiences and skills necessary to more successfully navigate their relationships with other people throughout childhood and into adulthood,” she said. 41. What do we know about the study from the passage? A. It paid close attention to the effect of fathers on their children. B. 912 children and adults took part in the study. C. It lasted as long as several months. D. It was funded by the California State University. 42. In the interviews, people were asked about all of the following things EXCEPT ______. A. their psychological distress B. their emotional distress C. their childhood stressful events D. their childhood relationships with their parents 43. What can be concluded from the passage? A. Parent-child relationships have a lasting effect on children. B. Adults with good childhood relationships with their parents are sure to be happy. C. The mother-child relationships is more important than the father-child one. D. The quality of parent-child relationships determines how people handle stress as adults. 44. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the findings of the study? A. People with a good relationship with others suffered less distress. B. Men with a good mother-child relationship were more likely to be emotionally stable than women. C. Women were more skilled at getting along with their parents than men. D. People with good childhood relationships with their parents suffered less stress. 45. The last paragraph mainly tells us about ______. A. how to live in a happy and harmonious family B. why parent-child relationships are so influential C. the importance of a happy childhood life D. the effect of the telephone interview 第三节:基础写作 请写一篇英语短文,介绍你最喜欢的电视节目。
