What is Friendship Force International? Friendship Force International provides opportunities to explore new countries and cultures from the inside by bringing people together at the personal level. Through the signature program of home hospitality, local hosts welcome international visitors into their culture, sharing with them meals, conversation, and the best sights and experiences of their region.
In a typical Friendship Force program, a local club prepares a series of cultural activities, inviting members from clubs in other countries to come and stay with them in their homes for up to a week.
There are many ways to explore the world through Friendship Force. For example, you may:
—Join a group making a cultural exploration of another country or of another region of your own country.
—Bring the world to your doorstep by hosting international visitors in your home.
—Join a cultural travel program formed around common interests such as gardening, hiking, wine and many others.
—Get involved with a Friendship Force club in your city, or organize one yourself.

While studying social insect behavior, researchers from the Agricultural University of Krakow, Poland, discovered a remarkable example of self-sacrifice in a species of ants found in Brazil. They found that the ants sacrifice themselves in order to avoid a possible threat.
When the sun sets, the ants seal up the entrance to their nest, but in doing so a few remain outside to kick sand over the entrance hole until it becomes invisible. These ants then die due to the cold, or get blown away in the wind. This door-sealing activity of these ants represents the first recorded case of insects sacrificing themselves through a preventive procedure. The ants sacrifice their lives every evening even if the nest isn’t under attack by enemies. The task takes about 50 minutes and the technique the ants use to kick sand backward over the hole with their hind legs is unique to the chore, strengthening the evidence that this is a premeditated activity instead of casual action. Once their task is completed, they usually quickly walk away.
In order to learn of the fate of these ants, the researchers placed sheets of thin plywood (胶合板) containing false openings over some real nest entrances. The ants carried on working until they had finished and were then left to wait for the dangers of the night. The researchers found that out of 23 ants working at night, only six survived until morning. The bodies of 10 were recovered, and the other seven were missing, most likely blown away and probably dead. The researchers said that the ants are probably older workers approaching death who are more unimportant than their younger nest mates.

Music died here last spring, or rather, it was killed by members of the school committee who ignored the importance of music and drama as part of the high school curriculum.
The committee decided that teaching students how to take a standardized test is more important than a curriculum in which students can explore their interests in the arts as well as academics. Because the school system is running out of funding, it needs to make sure that students pass the mastery test or even more money will be lost. If students fail the state standardized test, it is not the fault of drama and music classes .They are failing because the "academic" classes are not sufficient.
It is painful to think of how many students will be discouraged from singing, acting, and playing instruments because school programs are no longer offered. Many families cannot afford private music lessons, and many potential musicians and artists may not find their calling if they are not exposed to it in school. The fact that the school committee thinks the arts are not worth the investment will certainly make some students believe the arts are not worth their time or support and the cycle will continue.
Teaching for a test does not shape students into complete, well-rounded people. It blocks the natural sense to create and express feelings through art - there is more to life than the analytical thinking that math and English provide. What happens after a test? Sure, a student might graduate, but they will have limited knowledge - certainly not a good preparation for the real world.

Nowadays the U.S. Students are sleepy in school because they spend too much time texting, playing video games, watching TV, and using the media in other ways.
“Heavy media use interferes with sleep by reducing sleep duration, making it harder to fall asleep, and lowering sleep quality,” Meilan Zhang, an assistant professor at the University of Texas at El Paso, wrote in her research review in the journal, Sleep Medicine.
But the relationship between youth’s media use and sleep is not so simple, said Michael Gradisar, who authored both that review and the Sleep Medicine meta-analysis. “Technology use is the new evidence when we are trying to answer ‘Why are school-age children sleeping less?’” said Mr. Gradisar, an associate professor of psychology at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia.
There may be safe limits to technology use, Mr. Gradisar stated. For instance, recent research results indicate that using a bright screen for an hour before bed or even playing violent video games for less than that will not necessarily interfere with teenagers’ sleep, he wrote.
But longer periods of usage can be harmful to sleep, Mr. Gradisar added. Rather than delaying school start times, he said, the first step should be educating parents about limiting the hours that their children are using technology before bed, and enforcing a consistent bedtime.
Early school start times are also commonly blamed for students’ sleepiness, especially for adolescents. Secondary schools around the nation and the world have been delaying start times, often with positive results.
Mr. Minnich of the TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center hesitated to put blame to any particular factor. But he did think that cost-saving measures to consolidate(合并)bus routes might help explain U.S. students’ sleepiness.
“For those children who board the bus first, they must get up earlier, may end up sleeping on the way to school, and may end up arriving at school sleepy.” he said.
