Death Poets Society

In 1959, a pre school named Welton Academy with strict and traditional teaching principles had succeeded in sending a great number of its students to many top-ranking universities so that it became famous and respected in that country and lots of parents insisted on having their children here.

In the new semester, a young and passionate teacher Mr. Keating who is totally different from other teachers of the school was involved and took the place of an old teacher to be an English and Poetry teacher. He used a critical and creative way to teach his students. For example, in the first day, he didnt take class in the classroom but in the exhibition room to look at the old pictures for reminding his students to seize the day. In the poetry class, he asked the student to tip out the first pages of the book because he wanted his students to know that everyone can appreciate poetry in their own way but not on the basis of stiff principles. Whats more, he let his students to stand in the desks in class in order to encourage them to see things in different angles. In this way, his students show great interests in this new and young teacher so that they find out his personal files, in which it is recorded that Mr. Keating once was a member of Death Poets Society.

With great passion to poetry and freedom, his students recreated the Death Poets Society and got together every night to read and discuss gracious poets. Gradually, most of us developed a critical thinking and try to think for themselves, live for themselves and go for their dream. However, in this traditional school, they were supposed to learn that formalistic knowledge and go to famous universities, in which way could they be regarded as excellent students.

In such a contradictory atmosphere, tragedy took place. One of Keatings students, encouraged by Keating, decided to persuade his parents and go for his dream to be an actor, but his parents confirmedly deny his dream and offer no opportunity for him to have a try. Unfortunately, under great pressure and frustration, the student chose to commit suicide. In this circumstance, Mr. Keating was blamed for misleading his students to wrong values and he was fired.

The most exciting moment came in the last plot. When he was leaving, his students show their great respect and trust to Mr. Keating by standing on the desk they had been taught and call him loudly Oh! Captain! My captain!, which I think obviously can comfort and delight a teacher a lot.
