Today, we are going to talk about gender. We divide this pre to 2 parts. One is sexism and one is feminist movement.

At first, I’m going to give you a brief introduction about sexism.

Sexism means the unfair treatment of people, especially women, because of their sex; the attitude that causes this. Sexist attitudes may stem from traditional stereotypes of gender roles, and may include the belief that a person of one sex is superior to a person of the other.

Women in contemporary America have come a long way in every field of private and public life.

In the past, women were seen as helpmates to men, secondary wage-earners, and, primarily, as homemakers. And this held out the roles of piety, purity, submissiveness, and domesticity as the realm of true womanhood. In the early 19th century, the rise of paid labor and industrialization gave women avenues to self-sufficiency outside the marriage.

They began to protest this inequality and protect their own rights, but it would take until 1920 for women to push through the Nineteenth Amendment to win womens suffrage in national elections.

Suffrage means the right to vote in political elections.

Women's suffrage in the United States was achieved gradually, at state and local levels during the late 19th century and early 20th century.

This was the first woman known to legally vote in colonial America.

And these are people who campaigned for their legal right to vote. They carried the board which said “Mr. President, how long must women want for liberty?”

This was one of the Women's parades down Fifth Avenue, New York, carrying the signatures of a million women.

Finally, women won the long battle for the vote. On August 18, 1920, Tennessee narrowly ratified the Nineteenth Amendment, making it the law throughout the United States and granting full woman suffrage in all states of the United States.

In contemporary America, women have risen to near-equality in access to jobs, education and aspiration; and yet, near-equality is not equality and the struggle continues on how to create a more just society.

In 2002, Jennifer Granholm, the former governor of Michigan, once delivered a speech about sexism in America. The name of the speech is who is Emily.

Here are some quotes.

Hillary Clinton is also a fighter for womens rights.

In a speech, she argued very forcefully against practices that abused women around the world declaring that "it is no longer acceptable to discuss women's rights as separate from human rights".Delegates from over 180 countries heard her say: "If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, let it be that human rights are women's rights and women's rights are human rights, once and for all."
