  1.背熟:Needless to say, the bigger the risk an insurance company takes, the higher the premium you will have to pay.


  结构分析: Needless to say(插入语), the bigger(定) the risk(宾) an insurance company (主)takes(谓), the higher(定) the premium (宾)you(主) will have to pay(谓).


  短语:take the risk 冒险,承担风险


  句型:the +比较级,the +比较级......


  2.背熟:It is not uncommon to hear that a ship ping company has made a claim for the cost of salvaging a sunken ship.


  短语:make a claim 提出索赔要求


  结构分析:双重否定:


  1 Not + 否定 形容词 : Is not unreasonable


  2 not + without I can't live without you


  3 no + not/ no + no There is no cat that doesn't like fish


  There is nothing he can't do.


  There is no rule that has no exception / that doesn't have exception.


  3.背熟:it was almost impossible to attach hawsers and chains to the rim without damaging it.


  短语:attach to 把......连在......上;附加,使属于


  attach = tie 栓,系


  短语:rim = the sides of the dish


  结构分析:双重否定:not + without


  4. Eventually chains were fixed to one end of the disk and a powerful winch was put into operation.


  短语:Eventually = at last 语气比at last 强烈得多,


  终于:强调失败的结果用in the end 表示成功用at last, eventually


  eventually 重点强调经过努力而终于......


  finally 只表示顺序的最后

  5.背熟:For one agonizing moment, the dish was perched precariously on the bank of the canal

  短语:precariously = unsteady, unfirmly


  6. 背熟:There was danger that the wave would rebound off the other side of the bank and send the dish plunging into the water again. 如果大浪从对岸折回来的话,这个盘子就会重新落入水中。


  结构分析:send 造成,使得,+ v-ing (作宾语补足语)

  1.Hardly anyone can positively enjoy sitting in a train for more than a few hours.


  此处hardly用来修饰主语anyone,所以句子并没有倒装。


  Positively此处用来强调enjoy,看看例句中positively的不同意思


  e.g. The waitress was positively rude to us. (positively用于强调rude. It means she was completely rude to us. )


  e.g. He said quite positively that he would come.(positively=certainly, or definitely)


  e.g. The teacher spoke positively about the work he had done. (positively=favorably)


  2. ... but more often than not, the greater part of the journey is spent on roads with few service stations and too much traffic.


  More often than not意为经常(very frequently)


  e.g. More often than not she makes the same mistake.她常常犯同样的错误。


  3. By comparison, ferry trips or cruises offer a great variety of civilized comforts.


  By comparison意为相比之下,相形之下,等同于in comparison。


  运用时,句中的修饰语用原级,通常不用比较级。


  e.g. The old method suffers by comparison.老方法相形见拙。


  在点明与之比较的事物时,一般用in comparison with,例如:


  Your conclusion is wrong in comparison with their conclusion.你们的结论与他们的相比是错误的。


  4. If it is not, and you are likely to get seasick, no form of transport could be worse.


  if it is not后面省略了calm


  be likely to意为有可能


  e.g. He is not likely to come.他不见得会来。


  本句中,连词and用来连接一个表示结果的句子,意为:那么,则。And的这一用法尤其在口语中很常见


  e.g. If you don't make anything wrong, and you need have no blame.如果你没做错事,那么你不必自责。


  Seasick指"晕船",类似的表示有:airsick/carsick晕机/车


  No form of transport could be worse (than it) 为带有否定词的比较级表示级。


  5. But nothing can match them for speed and comfort.


  Match意为与......相匹敌(be equal to)


  e.g. No one can match him in singing.


  For此处意为"就......而言",相当于as far as.....be concerned.


  6. Travelling at a height of 30,000 feet, far above the clouds, and at over 500 miles an hour is an exhilarating experience.


  句中at a height of 30,ooo feet和at over 500 miles an hour为两个并列的介词短语作状语,修饰动名词主语travelling,并与其一同构成动名词短语,在句子中作主语。


  文中far above the clouds作插入语,对at a height of 30,000 feet作补充说明。


  7. However you decide to spend your time, one thing is certain: you will arrive at your destination fresh and uncrumpled.


  However意为"不管,无论", 为连接动词,引导让步状语从句。


  fresh and uncrumpled意为"精神焕发,毫无倦意"


  冒号后面的部分为one thing的同位语。

  2. Acting on the contention that facts are sacred,reporters can cause untold suffering to individuals by pub-lishing details about their private lives.


  acting on :to behave according to 以......来行事,遵循......来行事


  contention:opintion;disagreement


  eg:The issue is still in contention.


  sacred :神圣的,重要的 Life is sacred.


  untold:too much to be measured


  结构分析:复合句,现在分词短语极其所带同位语从句做原因状语,that引导的部分是contention 的同位语从句,by引导方式状语。


  3.Though we may enjoy reading about the lives of others, it is extremely doubtful whether we would equally enjoy reading about ourselves.


  doubtful =uncertain ;


  read of/about 读到(有关......的情况)


  结构分析:though引导让步状语从句,主句含有一个主语从句,it 形式主语


  unlikely 经常跟wherther引导的从句


  4.The story of a poor family that acquired fame and fortune overnight, dramatically illustrates the power of the press.


  acquire:obtain


  eg:They had become the victims of commercialization, for their names had acquired a market value.


  dramatically


  eg:Quite dramatically,she shrugged and shook her head.


  illustrate:explain


  eg:The latest conflict further illustrates the weakness of the UN.


  eg:The speaker illustrates his point with a diagram.


  5.As the parents had five children, life was a perpetual struggle against poverty.


  perpetual :overlasting


  struggle:永无休止的斗争在贫困中永无止尽的挣扎。


  the nation's struggle for independence


  the struggle between good and evil


  They would have continued to struggle against economic odds


  6. They were expecting their sixth child and faced with even more pressing economic problems.


  expecting a baby/be expecting 怀孕了


  He was overjoyed to learn that his wife was expecting(a baby).


  be face with 面临

  A pressing need/issue/ 迫切需要


  Their invitation was so pressing that I can do nothing but accept.
